1. General information

Below we provide the User with general information about what cookies are and what types of cookies exist.

What are cookies?

Cookies and other similar devices, such as pixels, web bugs, etc., are text or image files that are installed in the user's browser when they access an online service.

Cookies make it possible, among other things, to store and retrieve information about the user, their browser, their devices and the user's activity on the service they connect to.

What types of cookies exist?

There are many types of cookies. Below we offer the user some classifications of these, which does not necessarily imply that this service uses all of these types of cookies:

  • According to the entity that manages the cookies:
    • First-party cookies: those sent to the user's device or terminal from equipment or a domain belonging to the owner of a service and managed by that owner.
    • Third-party cookies: those sent to the user's device or terminal from equipment or a domain that is not managed by the owner of a service, but by a third party that will process the information obtained through the cookies.
  • According to how long they are retained:
    • Session cookies: those that collect and store data while the user accesses a service and that cease once the user leaves it.
    • Persistent cookies: those that have a duration set by the party responsible for the service. The retention period may range from a few minutes to several years. They are used to save and retrieve certain parameters each time the user visits a service.
  • According to their purpose:
    • Technical cookies: those that are essential and strictly necessary for the correct functioning and use of the different options or services offered by those responsible for it. For example, those used to maintain the session, manage response time, performance or the validation of options, use security features, etc.
    • Personalisation cookies: those that allow the user to specify or customise certain features of a service. For example, setting the language, regional configuration or browser type.
    • Analytical cookies: those that make it possible to count the number of unique visitors and analyse use of a service in order to measure interest in it or in particular areas of it. For example, an analytical cookie could be used to monitor the geographical areas from which the highest percentages of users connect, which product or service is most popular, etc.
    • Advertising cookies: those that allow the management of advertising spaces on a service.
    • Behavioural advertising cookies: those that allow the management of advertising spaces on a service. The function of these cookies is to store information about the behaviour of the users of a service in order subsequently to display personalised advertising.
  • Other technologies:
    • Pixels, web bugs or trackers: also known as tracking pixels, pixel tags or conversion pixels, web beacons. These are tiny transparent 1x1 pixel images that are inserted into a service in order to measure activity. Once a given page of the service loads in a browser, that image will load, and this data can be measured. Tracking pixels generally make it possible to determine the path that a given user IP has taken through an online service.
    • HTML5 storage: this consists of taking advantage of the capabilities of HTML5 technology to store certain parameters in the user's browser that can be used to identify that browser.
    • Local shared objects (LSO): also known as “flash cookies”, this consists of storing information without cookies on the user's device, taking advantage of Adobe Flash Player technology.
    • Etags: this is an HTTP protocol mechanism that allows validation of the cache that the user stores in their browser for a website. This technology is mainly used to save bandwidth by avoiding the duplicate downloading of content. However, it can also be used to recognise the user's browser.
    • Canvas fingerprinting: this consists of generating a unique shape in the user's browser, taking advantage of HTML5 web standard technology, in order to identify the user's device.
    • Font detection: this technique consists of identifying the font configuration of the user's device in order to obtain a unique identification of that device.
    • Browser cache: as its name indicates, this technique consists of storing information in the browser cache.
    • WebGL: this technique takes advantage of the ability of modern browsers to render three-dimensional shapes in order to obtain a unique identification of the device, given the different configuration of each one.
