Contemporary aesthetic medicine no longer seeks to transform the face or artificially halt the passage of time. The current trend points towards a much more sophisticated concept: preserving the health of the skin, maintaining facial identity and promoting harmonious, healthy and natural ageing.

In line with this vision, the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital hosted an exclusive conference dedicated to the concepts of Smart Ageing and Natural Ageing, bringing together clinical dermatology, skin prevention, photoprotection and advanced aesthetic medicine at an event organised in collaboration with Cantabria Labs, a Spanish pharmaceutical company and international leader in dermatology and photoprotection.

The official opening address was given by Dr María Cordón, CEO and founder of the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital, who welcomed attendees to an event designed to reflect on a new way of understanding skin ageing: through prevention, balance and comprehensive skin care.

The event was led by Dr Javier Pedraz Muñoz, head of the Dermatology department and director of the hospital’s Aesthetic Dermatology Unit, who also presented the various areas that make up the field of dermatology, including the Dermatological Surgery Unit, the Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases Unit, the Sexually Transmitted Infections Unit, the General Dermatology Unit and the Aesthetic Dermatology and Advanced Laser Treatment Unit.

During his presentation, Dr Pedraz discussed how modern dermatology has evolved from a purely corrective approach towards a preventative, personalised and biological strategy, in which concepts such as photoprotection, oxidative stress, low-grade chronic inflammation and the exposome play a central role.

“The skin is no longer understood solely from an aesthetic point of view. Today we are talking about preserving its functionality, its biological quality and its ability to remain healthy over time,” said Dr Pedraz during the conference.

One of the key themes of the conference was the importance of photoprotection and early prevention as fundamental tools in combating photoageing and cumulative skin damage. As outlined during the session, ultraviolet radiation remains one of the main factors involved in the visible ageing of the skin, contributing to dark spots, loss of elasticity, collagen breakdown and changes in skin texture.

“Sun protection is probably still the anti-ageing measure with the strongest scientific evidence,” explained Dr Pedraz. “But as well as preventing wrinkles or dark spots, we are also talking about skin health and long-term dermatological prevention.”

Throughout the day, some of the key current trends in advanced aesthetic dermatology were also discussed, including collagen biostimulation, regenerative treatments, laser medicine and approaches aimed at stimulating the body’s own biological mechanisms without resorting to overcorrection.

The concept of Natural Ageing also featured prominently at the event, championing a vision of aesthetic medicine centred on preserving facial expressiveness, respecting the harmony of the face and achieving results that are subtle, elegant and consistent with each patient’s anatomy.

“The current trend is not about transforming the patient, but about supporting the ageing process in an intelligent, healthy and natural way,” concluded Dr Pedraz.

The day concluded with a session dedicated to skincare routines and healthy habits, rounding off an event that combined medical education, prevention and advanced aesthetic dermatology within a setting designed for wellbeing, personalised care and excellence in healthcare. In addition, the event concluded with a brunch where attendees were able to share experiences, exchange views and socialise in a relaxed atmosphere. Some of the visitors also had the opportunity to tour the hospital’s facilities on a special guided tour.

Initiatives of this kind form part of the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital’s commitment to integrating specialised medicine, innovation, prevention and rigorous public education within a healthcare experience centred on the health and holistic care of the individual.
