The Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is launching its Paediatrics department with Dr Estela Bejerano and Dr Silvina Giannivelli

The new specialism offers comprehensive care for children and adolescents, ranging from prevention and monitoring of growth to the assessment of the most common conditions, care during adolescence, and a dedicated clinic for complementary feeding and the management of choking.

The Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is expanding its range of healthcare services with the launch of its Paediatrics department, led by Dr Estela Bejerano Hoyo and Dr Silvina Giannivelli Manco, two specialists with extensive experience in paediatric care and complementary professional backgrounds.

The new department is designed to provide comprehensive care for children and adolescents at different stages of their development, combining prevention, developmental monitoring, vaccination, clinical assessment and treatment of the most common health problems during childhood.

Its integration into the hospital setting also enables paediatric care to be coordinated with diagnostic tests and other specialities when the clinical situation requires it, thereby promoting continuity of care within the hospital itself.

As Dr Estela Bejerano explains: “Paediatrics is not just about treating a child when they are ill. Monitoring growth, prevention, health education and supporting families are essential for the early detection of any problems and for promoting healthy development.”

Paediatric care from infancy through to adolescence

This specialism covers regular health check-ups, assessment of growth and development, prevention and vaccination, and monitoring the specific needs of each stage of childhood.

In this regard, the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is also an authorised vaccination centre, which allows paediatric assessments and the administration of vaccines to be integrated into the routine care of children and adolescents.

Common reasons for consultation include fever, respiratory infections, pharyngitis, ear infections, bronchiolitis, gastroenteritis, abdominal pain, constipation, urinary tract infections, conjunctivitis and dermatitis, as well as other conditions frequently seen in children and adolescents.

Care also extends to adolescence, a stage with specific needs during which consultations may arise regarding pubertal development, weight changes, diet, sleep, headaches, acne or menstruation.

Dr Estela Bejerano Hoyo, a specialist in Paediatrics and its Specific Areas, has experience in paediatric emergency care, acute patient care, paediatric and neonatal intensive care, comprehensive follow-up of children and adolescents, and the care of paediatric patients with complex conditions. Her career also includes a particular focus on health education for families.

For her part, Dr Silvina Giannivelli Manco has over 30 years’ experience and is a specialist in Paediatrics and its Specific Areas. Her training includes two fellowship programmes in paediatric intensive care and paediatric liver transplantation. Her career also encompasses comprehensive paediatric care, prevention and monitoring of child development, vaccination and the care of paediatric patients with complex conditions, with a particular focus in her daily practice on infectious diseases and common childhood conditions.

Complementary feeding and choking management

The new range of healthcare services also includes a dedicated consultation on complementary feeding and choking management, designed to support families during a stage that often raises many questions.

The consultation combines a paediatric assessment with practical guidance on the gradual introduction of foods, safety during mealtimes and basic guidelines on what to do in the event of choking.

The hospital also plans to run workshops for families on complementary feeding and the prevention and management of choking, thereby reinforcing the preventative and educational aspects of paediatric care.

Integrated paediatrics within the hospital setting

The launch of the Paediatrics department expands the capacity of the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital to support families throughout childhood and adolescence, within a care model that facilitates coordination between professionals and specialities.

Where necessary, the paediatrician can request diagnostic tests or assessments by other specialists, promoting a coordinated approach and greater continuity of care.

With this new specialism, the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital continues to expand its range of services and incorporates paediatric care into its comprehensive care model, from prevention and monitoring to the diagnosis and treatment of health issues specific to childhood and adolescence.
