A boost to specialist training through clinical excellence

On 16 and 17 April, the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital hosted the course ‘Recent Developments, Controversies and Long-Term Effects in Ankle and Foot Fractures’, an initiative that brought together specialists in Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery to discuss the latest advances in the treatment of these complex injuries.

The course was led by Dr Jesús Vilá y Rico, head of the hospital’s Foot and Ankle Unit, whose career and specialisation have shaped the clinical and scientific focus of the event.

“This course was created with the aim of sharing practical and up-to-date knowledge amongst specialists, addressing both the advances and the controversies that continue to exist in the treatment of these injuries,” said Dr Vilá y Rico.

This event represents the first scientific activity held at the hospital, conceived as the starting point for an ongoing training and outreach programme, which aims to establish itself as a benchmark in the medical field.

In the words of the founder and CEO, Dr María Cordón, “it is a priority for the hospital to offer our specialists an environment that fosters the development of their scientific work, whilst also providing forums for exchange that contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and the advancement of clinical practice”.

A space designed for knowledge

The event took place in the Pilar Muro Auditorium, a modern and welcoming venue with capacity for around a hundred attendees, designed, amongst other things, to host scientific meetings.

Its facilities have fostered the exchange of clinical experiences and debate amongst professionals in an environment that reflects the hospital’s commitment to academic excellence.

A high-calibre scientific programme

Over the course of two days, the course provided a comprehensive overview of the management of ankle, calcaneal and talus fractures, as well as Lisfranc injuries, combining theoretical sessions, discussions of clinical cases and round-table debates focused on clinical practice.

Among the most notable presentations, Dr Jesús Vilá y Rico presented an up-to-date overview of the comprehensive management of ankle fractures, as well as his experience in the treatment of post-traumatic osteoarthritis and in advanced osteosynthesis techniques for complex fractures.

The programme also featured contributions from renowned specialists such as Dr Arancha Capel, Dr Elvira Iglesias, Dr María Álvarez Postigo, Dr Zaira González and Dr Sarah Mills, as well as specialists including Dr Álvaro López Hualda, Dr Jorge de las Heras and Dr Pablo Corona, amongst other professionals, who addressed key issues such as posterior malleolar fixation, the role of arthroscopy, syndesmotic stabilisation and the management of complications and sequelae.

The specialist’s perspective: precision and constant evolution

During his presentation, Dr Vilá y Rico emphasised the importance of a rigorous and up-to-date approach: “In foot and ankle pathology, every detail counts. The correct indication, surgical technique and patient follow-up are crucial for preventing sequelae and improving functional outcomes.”

He also highlighted the role of such initiatives within the hospital itself: “For us, as a hospital, it is essential to create opportunities for training and discussion. These kinds of meetings not only update our knowledge but also enable us to continue moving towards more precise and personalised medicine.”

Commitment to knowledge and the future

With the holding of this course, the Públio Cordón Memorial Hospital is launching a programme of scientific and educational activities that reinforces its commitment to excellence in care, medical innovation and continuing professional development.

This first initiative marks the start of a programme that will continue to develop over the coming months, with the aim of establishing the hospital as a leading centre for the generation and dissemination of medical knowledge, always focused on providing the highest quality, patient-centred care.

Collaboration with the specialist industry

The course has been developed in collaboration with companies in the medical technology sector, such as JEMED Surgical Devices, Paragon 28 and Bonalive, whose participation has helped to enrich the scientific content of the event.

The involvement of these organisations has enabled the integration of technological innovation with clinical practice, promoting the adoption of the latest surgical techniques and therapeutic solutions applied to foot and ankle surgery.
