Aortic Aneurysm Unit

Specialists in Aortic Aneurysms and Complex Aortic Pathology

The Aortic Aneurysm Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital, headed by Dr Issac Martínez López, forms part of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Department and specialises in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of aneurysmal dilations of the aorta in their various locations, as well as aneurysmal conditions associated with the iliac region.

The unit treats cases ranging from those of lower complexity to advanced conditions requiring precise planning and a high level of specialisation. Its clinical practice is underpinned by expert judgement, appropriate therapeutic indications and the use of advanced techniques, with a particular focus on the endovascular treatment of aortic aneurysms, where this is the most suitable option for each patient.

The care model combines medical expertise, specialised technology and personalised support, aimed at providing confidence in decision-making and clarity throughout the entire clinical process.

Personalised endovascular planning The Aortic Aneurysm Unit is highly specialised in the endovascular management of aneurysms, including complex anatomical cases requiring advanced planning. This expertise enables us to offer precise and safe solutions, tailored to the location and characteristics of each aneurysm.

What types of aneurysmal conditions do we treat?

The Unit deals with a wide range of aneurysms of the aorta and its branches, including:

  • Abdominal, infrarenal and juxtarenal aortic aneurysms

  • Thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms

  • Aneurysms of the iliac region, either isolated or associated with an aortic aneurysm

  • Complex aneurysmal conditions involving visceral branches

  • Cases requiring specialised monitoring due to the risk of growth, complications or rupture

Each case is assessed on an individual basis, taking into account the anatomy of the aneurysm, its progression, risk factors and the patient’s overall clinical condition.

How treatment is assessed and decided upon

The care process begins with a thorough clinical assessment, based on active listening and an evaluation of the actual risk posed by each aneurysm. This phase is supported by advanced imaging studies, such as contrast-enhanced computed tomography and three-dimensional reconstruction of the aorta, which enable precise analysis of its morphology, extent and relationship with the arterial branches.

The decision on treatment is based on expert judgement, always prioritising safety and ensuring the treatment is appropriate for each individual. The decision is presented clearly and reasoned, explaining the various options available and allowing sufficient time for an informed decision to be made, based on objective data and detailed planning.

Endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms

Where the patient’s anatomy and clinical condition allow, the unit prioritises endovascular treatment of aortic aneurysms, a minimally invasive alternative that avoids open surgery in a high percentage of cases.

The team has specific expertise in:

  • Standard endovascular repair (EVAR) for aneurysms with favourable anatomy

  • Complex endovascular techniques using fenestrated stents (FEVAR) or branched stents (BEVAR), indicated for juxtarenal, thoracoabdominal or visceral branch aneurysms

  • Specific treatment of iliac aneurysms using devices designed to preserve blood flow and reduce complications

In selected cases, and when the endovascular option is not suitable, the Unit also performs open aortic surgery, always in accordance with strict planning and safety criteria.

A personalised treatment The treatment of an aortic aneurysm depends not only on the techniques available, but also on a well-founded clinical indication. The Unit prioritises an individualised assessment of each case in order to select the most appropriate approach, thereby avoiding unnecessary interventions and ensuring that decisions are in line with each person’s actual risk and clinical situation.

Clinical expertise and specialist work in aneurysmal pathology

The Unit comprises a highly specialised team with extensive experience in the comprehensive management of aneurysmal pathology, ranging from the most common cases to the most complex. Under the leadership of Dr Issac Martínez López, the team’s practice is based on technical precision, the correct indication for each procedure and a working approach centred on clinical rigour.

Care is underpinned by clear information, careful planning and ongoing follow-up, with the aim of providing confidence and reassurance at every stage of the care process.
