Patient information

Varicose Veins Unit

Treatment of venous disorders

The unit treats patients with venous disease of the lower limbs and pelvic venous disorders, conditions which can cause persistent symptoms and have a significant impact on quality of life. Its clinical work focuses on accurately identifying the cause of the venous problem and determining the most appropriate course of treatment for each case, ranging from superficial conditions to more clinically complex situations, including advanced venous insufficiency.

Expert clinical assessment Venous disease can progress silently for years. A specialist assessment makes it possible to determine whether there is a significant functional impairment, to distinguish between low-risk cases and those requiring treatment, and to prevent medium- and long-term complications.

Venous conditions requiring specialist assessment

The unit specialises in treating, amongst others, the following conditions:

  • Varicose veins of the lower limbs

  • Chronic venous insufficiency at various stages of progression

  • Advanced venous insufficiency affecting both the superficial and deep venous systems

  • Pelvic varicose veins, also known as pelvic congestion syndrome or pelvic venous insufficiency

  • Chronic pelvic pain of venous origin

Diagnostic process and therapeutic decision-making

The care process begins with a detailed clinical assessment, aimed at understanding the symptoms, their progression and the functional impact on each patient. The diagnostic investigation relies primarily on vascular Doppler ultrasound and, where indicated, on phlebographic studies, which enable a precise assessment of the anatomy and function of the venous system.

Based on this information, the team establishes the most appropriate treatment strategy, always prioritising the correct medical indication, the appropriateness of the treatment and patient safety. Decisions are explained clearly, ensuring a full understanding of the diagnosis and the various options available.

Treatment options and surgical approach

Where treatment is indicated, the unit offers a comprehensive range of treatment options tailored to each patient’s specific clinical situation.

In cases of superficial venous insufficiency, minimally invasive techniques such as thermal or chemical ablation of varicose veins are used, employing endovenous laser, radiofrequency or microfoam, selected according to the patient’s venous anatomy and clinical profile.

In more complex situations, the unit also performs endovascular treatment procedures on the superficial femoral artery (SFA) and infrainguinal bypasses, where these options provide a genuine clinical benefit and are appropriately indicated.

Furthermore, the hospital is equipped with High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology, which enables the treatment of certain varicose veins without incisions or catheters, using high-precision ultrasound guided by echography.

In the field of pelvic varicose veins (pelvic congestion syndrome), the Unit performs image-guided pelvic embolisation procedures, which are indicated following a careful clinical assessment and are designed to relieve symptoms effectively and safely.

Individualised treatment recommendations The treatment of varicose veins is determined following a comprehensive clinical and ultrasound assessment. The Unit determines the most appropriate treatment option on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the patient’s functional status and the clinical impact, prioritising proportionate decisions based on actual benefit.

An expert team with a personalised approach

The Unit’s medical team comprises specialists in angiology and vascular surgery with extensive experience in managing both common and highly complex venous conditions. Their approach is based on clinical rigour, accumulated experience and a close professional relationship with the patient, taking the time necessary to explain the diagnosis and guide the patient through the treatment decision-making process.

This care model enables us to provide specialised, safe care tailored to each individual’s actual needs, whilst always prioritising medical expertise and the quality of care.

Specialist assessment of complex venous disease

The Varicose Veins Unit offers an expert clinical assessment aimed at identifying the cause of the venous problem and determining, based on medical judgement, the most appropriate course of treatment for each clinical situation.
