Electrophysiology and Arrhythmias Unit

Specialist unit for atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm disorders

The unit is staffed by cardiologists specialising in clinical electrophysiology and in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders requiring specialist assessment.

Its work focuses on risk stratification, the appropriate indication for pharmacological or interventional treatment, and the individualised planning of procedures such as ablation or device implantation where indicated. The approach combines diagnostic precision, safety and structured follow-up throughout the entire care process.

Specialist assessment of atrial fibrillation Atrial fibrillation requires an individualised assessment. Clinical evaluation makes it possible to identify which patients are at risk of stroke or cardiac complications and which can be managed through structured follow-up.

Arrhythmias requiring specialist assessment

The unit assesses and treats the main heart rhythm disorders, ranging from common, symptomatic forms to complex arrhythmias requiring advanced electrophysiological investigation.

These include:

  • Atrial fibrillation and other atrial arrhythmias

  • Supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias

  • Bradycardias and conduction disorders

  • Complex arrhythmias associated with structural heart disease or heart failure

Each case is assessed on an individual basis, taking into account the severity of symptoms, their functional impact, the risk of embolism or haemodynamic compromise, and the patient’s overall clinical context, with the aim of determining the most appropriate treatment strategy.

How an arrhythmia is assessed and treatment decided

The care process begins with a thorough clinical assessment, based on active listening and diagnostic tests that enable an accurate understanding of the type of atrial fibrillation and its clinical implications.

Where indicated, an electrophysiological study is carried out in a specialised laboratory, supported by three-dimensional navigation systems and electroanatomical mapping, which enable the heart’s electrical activity to be analysed with precision and provide a basis for well-reasoned therapeutic decisions.

Based on this information, the most appropriate treatment option — medical management, interventional procedures or device implantation — is proposed, with each step explained clearly and comprehensively.

Atrial fibrillation ablation: a precise and minimally invasive treatment

Where arrhythmia can be treated definitively, the unit performs ablation procedures using cryotherapy, pulsed-field technology or radiofrequency.

These techniques allow the unit to target the source of atrial fibrillation directly without the need for open surgery, reducing the invasiveness of the procedure and promoting a faster recovery, whilst ensuring high levels of precision, safety and efficacy.

Individualised treatment decisions in atrial fibrillation The indication for treatment is determined following a comprehensive clinical assessment. An analysis of thromboembolic risk, symptoms and cardiovascular profile enables us to determine when treatment is necessary and which strategy is most appropriate in each case.

Implantation of cardiac devices in atrial fibrillation and complex arrhythmias

The unit has extensive experience in implanting pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation devices, where atrial fibrillation or the patient’s clinical condition requires it.

Follow-up care combines remote monitoring with face-to-face check-ups, ensuring continuous monitoring tailored to each individual’s progress.

Specialist clinical follow-up

Treatment for atrial fibrillation does not end with the procedure. Medical follow-up is an essential part of the care process, both in the early stages and in the long term.

Ongoing monitoring allows us to assess clinical progress, safely adjust treatment and anticipate potential complications, ensuring stability and confidence at every stage.

We take the time needed to explain the progression of the condition, answer any questions and review the various treatment options when necessary. The care relationship is based on ongoing medical support and clear communication, promoting informed decisions and care tailored to each person’s actual needs.

Specialist assessment of atrial fibrillation

In the event of a recent diagnosis, symptomatic recurrences or uncertainty regarding the indication for anticoagulation or ablation, the Electrophysiology and Arrhythmias Unit offers an expert assessment to review the case and determine the most appropriate treatment and follow-up strategy.
