Cardiovascular Center
The unit
The Haemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital carries out the diagnosis and percutaneous treatment of coronary heart disease, performing procedures inside the arteries without open surgery to restore blood flow with precision and ongoing monitoring.

Patient information
The Haemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital, which forms part of the Cardiology Department, is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of complex cardiovascular diseases using percutaneous procedures — that is, procedures carried out via small incisions in the skin, without the need for open surgery—and minimally invasive techniques.
Its work combines clinical expertise, high-precision technology and a rigorous assessment of each case, with the aim of determining the most appropriate intervention in every situation and ensuring safe and well-founded treatment decisions.
The unit treats patients with coronary, valvular and structural heart conditions who require specialist assessment and a precise interventional approach. The clinical aim is to offer the most appropriate treatment option in each case, avoiding unnecessary procedures and selecting the treatment that offers the greatest benefit and safety, based on a comprehensive assessment of the clinical situation.
Specialists in the Haemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology Unit manage cardiovascular diseases that require expert assessment and possible percutaneous treatment, particularly in more complex cases or when it is necessary to precisely define the therapeutic indication.
The unit’s clinical activities include, amongst others:
Coronary artery disease, including complex lesions.
Valvular heart disease, particularly of the aortic and mitral valves.
Structural heart diseases, such as defects in the cardiac septa.
Other cardiovascular conditions suitable for percutaneous treatment following specialist assessment.
Each of these conditions requires an individualised assessment to precisely determine the therapeutic indication and select the most appropriate procedure based on the risk and expected benefit.
Each patient is assessed through a detailed clinical evaluation and the analysis of specific diagnostic tests, such as cardiac imaging and haemodynamic studies, aimed at accurately understanding the anatomy and functional impact of the disease.
Decisions are based on expert judgement and appropriate therapeutic indications, with sufficient time being taken to explain the available options and to support the patient through the decision-making process.

The unit carries out diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using cardiac catheterisation, both for the investigation and treatment of coronary artery disease, including percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) with stent implantation where indicated.
In the field of structural and valvular cardiology, advanced techniques are carried out, such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), transcatheter mitral valve repair using a valve approximation device (TEER) and percutaneous closure of intracardiac defects, provided that the clinical situation warrants it.
All procedures are carried out in a state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatre, equipped with high-precision cardiovascular imaging systems, which enable procedures to be planned and performed in a controlled environment, in accordance with strict safety and clinical monitoring criteria.
The team of interventional cardiologists has extensive experience in managing complex cardiovascular conditions and works in a coordinated manner within the Heart Team model, a multidisciplinary committee that assesses each case collectively.
This approach integrates diagnosis, referral and treatment into a single care pathway, taking the time necessary to clearly explain the clinical situation, the available options and the associated risks. Decision-making is a shared process, ensuring continuous support, transparent communication and structured follow-up before and after each procedure.
Where a percutaneous procedure is indicated, or where coronary or valvular disease is present, the Haemodynamics Unit provides an expert assessment to confirm the treatment strategy and plan the procedure in accordance with safety criteria and technical precision.
