The Dermatology and Venereology Department at Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes, as well as sexually transmitted infections and immune-mediated inflammatory disorders.
The organisation into distinct clinical units allows each condition to be treated with specific attention and hospital-wide coordination where complexity so requires. From the very first consultation, a rigorous diagnostic assessment is carried out, followed by an individualised treatment plan and structured follow-up, ensuring clinical stability and confidence in the patient’s progress.
The care model is based on diagnostic precision, evidence-based management and continuity of care throughout the entire process.
Dermatological conditions can progress to persistent, inflammatory or neoplastic forms that require specialist expertise. Similarly, sexually transmitted infections demand an accurate diagnosis and structured management to prevent complications.
Changes in pigmented lesions, suspected skin cancer, recurrent inflammatory flare-ups, autoimmune skin conditions or situations involving a risk of infection are scenarios in which an expert dermatological assessment is crucial.
A specialist assessment enables the diagnosis to be confirmed with precision and a coherent, medically sound treatment strategy to be established from the outset.
The care process begins with a consultation aimed at conducting an in-depth analysis of the clinical situation. A detailed examination and the supplementary tests indicated in each case enable a precise diagnosis to be established.
The treatment plan is established following an individual assessment that considers the type of condition, its extent, its functional or aesthetic impact, and the available alternatives. Every decision is made on the basis of sound clinical criteria and up-to-date scientific evidence.
In the case of chronic, inflammatory or infectious conditions, follow-up is structured according to established protocols to maintain clinical control and adjust treatment where necessary. Continuity of care ensures consistency and safety throughout the course of the condition.

The speciality is organised into distinct units, enabling each skin condition to be addressed with specific technical expertise and consistent diagnostic criteria. This structure facilitates more precise treatment decisions and consistent follow-up for chronic or more complex conditions.
The General Dermatology Unit specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of common and complex skin conditions, including chronic inflammatory diseases, precancerous lesions and primary skin tumours that have not spread
The assessment combines a systematic clinical examination with precision diagnostic tools, enabling evidence-based therapeutic decisions to be made and structured follow-up plans to be established where the nature of the condition requires it.
The Dermatological Surgery Unit provides surgical treatment for skin lesions requiring precise resection and rigorous histological monitoring.
This includes the management of skin tumours — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma — and of lesions located in anatomically sensitive areas, whether functionally or cosmetically. Surgical planning is tailored to the individual and incorporates advanced techniques, including Mohs micrographic surgery where indicated, prioritising oncological safety and functional and aesthetic preservation.
The Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases Unit focuses on the management of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune skin conditions requiring long-term therapeutic control
This includes moderate to severe psoriasis, severe atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa and complex autoimmune dermatoses. Advanced systemic therapies are prescribed in accordance with strict clinical criteria, with protocolised follow-up and continuous assessment of the therapeutic response.
The Sexually Transmitted Infections Unit provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of infections affecting sexual health
Clinical assessment, specific microbiological testing and the contextualised interpretation of results enable us to establish a treatment plan in line with up-to-date clinical guidelines. Where necessary, structured follow-up is organised, maintaining strict confidentiality and sound medical judgement at every stage of the process.
The department comprises dermatologists with specific expertise in their respective areas, enabling a genuine level of subspecialisation within an organised structure.
Coordination between units and with other hospital specialities ensures a comprehensive approach when clinical complexity requires it. Clear medical communication, personalised planning and ongoing follow-up form an essential part of the care model.
This approach combines clinical rigour, structured organisation and continuity of care, providing a safe environment in which to address any dermatological or venereological problem with expert judgement and complete confidence in the care provided.
A specialist assessment enables the diagnosis to be confirmed, the appropriate treatment to be determined and a follow-up plan to be drawn up in line with the patient’s clinical progress.
