Dermatological Surgery Unit

Advanced dermatological surgery

The Dermatological Surgery Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is a highly specialised department dedicated to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of skin conditions requiring a precise and technically advanced approach.

It specialises in particular in skin tumours and lesions located in anatomically sensitive areas, whether functionally or cosmetically. Its practice is based on rigorous clinical assessment, individualised surgical planning and the pursuit of an outcome that combines cancer control, functional preservation and aesthetic quality.

From the outset, patients are assessed within a structured clinical setting, where accumulated experience and the organisation of care enable the department to manage both routine cases and situations involving greater surgical complexity.

Anatomical areas of particular sensitivity Injuries to the face or other anatomically delicate areas may require specific techniques and advanced reconstructive planning to preserve function and aesthetic proportions

Specialist care for complex skin lesions

This unit is aimed at patients presenting with suspicious skin lesions, confirmed tumours or skin conditions requiring excision with precise histological assessment. A specialist assessment is particularly recommended where there are oncological risk factors, lesions are located in visible areas, or advanced reconstruction is required.

Compared with general care, the unit offers specific expertise in oncological and reconstructive dermatological surgery, ensuring that decisions are based on sound clinical criteria and current scientific evidence.

Where there is diagnostic uncertainty, a specialist consultation helps to clarify the situation using medical judgement.

Individualised surgical planning

The unit routinely treats skin conditions requiring surgical treatment, always following a detailed assessment of each case and taking into account the available treatment options.

Among the most common conditions are:

  • Basal cell carcinoma

  • Squamous cell carcinoma

  • Melanoma

  • Suspicious pigmented lesions

  • Moles with clinical changes

  • Skin cysts

  • Persistent warts

  • Abnormal scars

  • Other lesions requiring excision or cosmetic correction

Each case is assessed taking into account the type of lesion, its location, the patient’s general condition and the potential functional or cosmetic impact, in order to determine the most appropriate treatment strategy for each individual case.

Accurate diagnosis and evidence-based clinical decision-making

The process begins with a specialist dermatology consultation, which includes a detailed clinical examination and high-resolution digital dermatoscopy. Where indicated, diagnostic biopsies or histopathological examinations are carried out to accurately determine the nature of the lesion.

In complex cases, we work in close collaboration with Pathology, Oncology and other relevant specialities, ensuring a comprehensive approach. Surgical planning is established following a careful analysis of the diagnosis, the extent of the lesion and the available reconstructive options.

Advanced surgical techniques and rigorous indications

The unit performs high-precision surgical techniques tailored to the type of lesion and its anatomical location.

These include Mohs micrographic surgery, considered the international standard for the controlled removal of certain skin tumours, particularly in areas such as the nose, lips, eyelids or outer ear, where the preservation of healthy tissue is essential.

The unit also carries out procedures such as conventional surgical excision, shave excision, curettage, electrodissection and cryotherapy, as well as radical surgery when required for oncological reasons.

In the field of reconstructive surgery, the team has experience in direct closure, local flaps — including rotation, advancement, transposition, Z-plasty and island flaps — and partial or full-thickness skin grafts, always with the aim of preserving function and optimising the aesthetic outcome.

Early treatment and day surgery Most skin tumours detected at an early stage can be treated with day-case surgery, followed by a rapid recovery and a structured follow-up programme.

A specialist team and support throughout every stage

The unit comprises dermatologists who specialise specifically in skin surgery and have extensive experience in complex oncological and reconstructive conditions. This level of subspecialisation enables us to approach each case with expert judgement, technical precision and a carefully reasoned surgical plan.

The care model is not limited to the surgical procedure itself, but is based on a structured approach that ensures sufficient time is taken to assess each lesion thoroughly, explain the diagnosis clearly and analyse the various treatment options available. Planning is not standardised: it is tailored to the clinical situation, the anatomical location and the patient’s functional and aesthetic priorities.

Decision-making is informed and supported. From the initial consultation through to follow-up care, the patient has access to a team that is approachable, well-coordinated and committed to providing reassurance at every stage of the process.

Specialist assessment in dermatological surgery

A specialist assessment makes it possible to confirm the need for surgery, determine the actual extent of the injury and establish a treatment strategy appropriate to the clinical situation. A personalised assessment makes it easier to plan treatment judiciously and with confidence.
