Specialty of Diagnostic Imaging

The Diagnostic Imaging Department at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital combines Radiodiagnostics and Nuclear Medicine within a coordinated framework designed to provide reliable, safe and clinically significant diagnoses.

Each examination is carried out on the basis of a justified medical referral and as part of a structured process that prioritises the actual clinical value of the test.

The combination of high-definition anatomical imaging and advanced functional imaging enables precise analysis of both the structure and the biological activity of the disease.

The aim is clear: to provide sound diagnostic information that enables therapeutic decisions to be made with confidence and on a sound basis.

When diagnostic accuracy determines clinical decision-making

In oncological, neurological, cardiovascular, abdominal or musculoskeletal pathology, image quality and its specialist interpretation have a direct influence on the treatment strategy.

This speciality is called upon when it is necessary to confirm a diagnosis, determine the true extent of a disease, assess the response to treatment, or investigate complex symptoms requiring the highest level of clinical clarity.

Each examination is ordered in accordance with up-to-date medical criteria, avoiding unnecessary tests and ensuring that the requested examination provides information relevant to the clinical management plan.

Anatomical and functional integration The combination of structural and functional imaging enables us to understand not only where the lesion is located, but also how it behaves biologically, providing a more comprehensive diagnostic picture.

A structured process from referral to interpretation

The procedure begins with the clinical validation of the referral and the selection of the most appropriate test for each situation.

The test is carried out using optimised protocols and under specialist supervision.

Interpretation is not limited to the technical analysis of the image, but is integrated into the patient’s full clinical context.

Coordination between the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine departments, together with direct collaboration with Oncology, Neurology, Cardiology and other specialities, enables informed decisions to be made without unnecessary delays.

This model ensures diagnostic certainty and consistency in treatment planning.

Innovation in imaging requires expert interpretation.

Units with complementary specialisms

The speciality is organised into two units that work in an integrated manner to provide a comprehensive view of the pathological process.

Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine Unit carries out advanced functional diagnostics using metabolic imaging techniques, particularly in the fields of oncology, neurology and cardiovascular medicine.

Through the controlled and safe use of radiopharmaceuticals, it enables the analysis of biological activity in organs and tissues, the detection of disease at an early stage, the determination of its extent, and the assessment of response to systemic treatments.

It utilises hybrid equipment such as PET-CT and SPECT-CT, as well as established examinations such as bone scintigraphy and myocardial perfusion scintigraphy, always in accordance with strict radiological safety protocols and on the basis of sound clinical indications.

The interpretation of these results is integrated into the patient’s overall treatment strategy.

Radiodiagnostics

The Radiodiagnostics Unit provides high-definition diagnostic imaging for neurological, thoracic, abdominal, breast and musculoskeletal conditions.

It employs radiologists specialising specifically in neuroimaging, thoraco-abdominal radiology, breast radiology and musculoskeletal radiology, ensuring expert interpretation in each area.

It is equipped with high-definition magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) with dose optimisation, and digital mammography for the early detection of breast cancer, complemented by image-guided biopsies and minimally invasive procedures where indicated.

Each scan is interpreted within a comprehensive clinical framework, providing crucial information for treatment planning.

Coordinated multidisciplinary interpretation In cases of complex conditions, the images are reviewed jointly with the relevant specialist departments in order to correlate the radiological findings with the clinical picture and guide treatment decisions.

Diagnostic coordination and high resolution

The integration of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine enables the joint analysis of structural and functional information obtained from imaging tests.

This correlation facilitates a more accurate diagnostic interpretation and enables the results to be incorporated into the clinical process without unnecessary delays, thereby avoiding duplicate investigations.

The combination of medical sub-specialisation and advanced technology ensures that each examination provides useful information for diagnosis, treatment planning and patient follow-up.

Conducting an imaging study

Conducting the study using highly precise protocols and interpreting the results in a coordinated manner enables robust diagnostic conclusions to be drawn, which are then integrated into the overall treatment strategy.
