Patient information
The Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital, which forms part of the Gastroenterology Department, specialises in the endoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract, offering both diagnostic and therapeutic services for both general and complex gastrointestinal conditions.
Its care model is based on expert medical judgement, the precise indication for each procedure and person-centred care, ensuring safety and support at every stage of the process.
The Unit treats patients who require an endoscopic assessment due to persistent digestive symptoms, abnormalities detected in previous tests, or as part of prevention and follow-up programmes.
It also deals with complex gastrointestinal conditions that require advanced techniques and careful planning of the procedure at every stage of the clinical process.
The aim is to provide an accurate diagnostic and therapeutic response, tailored to each individual situation, whilst avoiding unnecessary investigations and ensuring a safe and controlled environment from the very first point of contact.
The Digestive Endoscopy Unit specialises in treating a wide range of digestive problems that require accurate assessment and, in many cases, targeted endoscopic treatment.
The conditions investigated and treated include, amongst others:
Prevention and early detection of gastrointestinal cancer
Polyps and pre-malignant lesions of the digestive tract
Gastrointestinal haemorrhage and anaemia of gastrointestinal origin
Inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract
Stenosis and obstructions of the oesophagus, stomach or colon
Biliary tract disorders
Diseases of the pancreas requiring advanced endoscopic investigation
Each condition is assessed on a case-by-case basis, with the aim of determining the most appropriate technique for each case and providing a safe diagnostic or therapeutic solution, based on medical judgement and support throughout the entire process.

Each case begins with an individualised clinical assessment, based on active listening, a detailed review of the patient’s medical history and an analysis of the available test results.
The decision to perform an endoscopy is based on expert medical judgement, selecting the most appropriate technique according to the diagnostic or therapeutic objective.
The process is explained clearly and comprehensively, with ample time set aside to address any queries and facilitate informed decisions, within a framework of continuous support before, during and after the procedure.
The unit carries out diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, polyp resection, endoscopic treatment of bleeding, dilation of strictures and the placement of gastrointestinal stents.
It also offers advanced techniques such as echoendoscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, which are used in the investigation and treatment of diseases of the bile ducts and the pancreas.
All procedures are carried out using advanced endoscopic equipment and in accordance with strict safety protocols, with each procedure tailored to the patient’s clinical condition and individual needs.
Care at the Digestive Endoscopy Unit is based on the expertise of specialists in the digestive system who are trained in advanced endoscopy and the management of complex digestive conditions.
Each procedure is carefully planned, taking into account the specific clinical situation and the individual needs of each patient.
Work is carried out in coordination with other units within the Gastroenterology Department and, where the case requires it, with other specialist departments at the hospital, enabling us to provide a comprehensive overview and make well-informed clinical decisions.
Throughout the entire process — from the referral for the test to the subsequent follow-up — we prioritise support, clear information and respect for the time needed to understand, decide and carry out each procedure safely and with confidence.
When an endoscopic examination or a gastrointestinal diagnosis is indicated, the Unit provides an expert assessment to confirm the indication and plan the procedure in accordance with criteria for safety and diagnostic accuracy.
