Hepatometabolic Unit

Specialist diagnosis and management of liver diseases

The Hepatology and Metabolism Unit at Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital, which forms part of the Gastroenterology Department, is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of liver diseases, with a particular focus on their relationship with metabolic disorders.

Its work focuses on the rigorous analysis of each clinical case and on defining treatment strategies tailored to the stage of the disease and the individual’s risk profile.

When is a specialist liver assessment indicated?

This service is aimed at people who present with persistent abnormal laboratory results, symptoms consistent with liver disease, a previous diagnosis requiring follow-up, or a need for a second expert opinion.

The aim is to confirm the diagnosis, determine the actual risk of progression and establish an appropriate and safe clinical management plan.

Risk assessment and progression of liver disease Many liver diseases progress silently for years. A specialist assessment makes it possible to identify the extent of liver damage, distinguish between stable conditions and those at risk of progression, and guide clinical management with precision.

Which liver diseases require specialist monitoring

Among the conditions most frequently assessed are:

  • Fatty liver associated with metabolic dysfunction (NAFLD / NASH)

  • Viral hepatitis

  • Alcoholic liver disease

  • Autoimmune liver diseases

  • Genetic and metabolic disorders

  • Iron metabolism disorders, such as haemochromatosis

  • Liver cirrhosis and its complications

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma

Each case is assessed on an individual basis to determine the stage of the disease and establish the most appropriate follow-up or treatment strategy.

How liver disease is assessed and treatment determined

The assessment begins with a detailed clinical examination and an analysis of medical history and risk factors. The assessment is supplemented by specific tests such as advanced liver ultrasound and elastography, and, where indicated, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or a liver biopsy, in coordination with the relevant departments.

Treatment decisions are based on a rigorous integration of clinical and diagnostic data, with the aim of initiating treatment at the appropriate time and avoiding unnecessary interventions.

Medical treatment and monitoring of disease progression

The approach is primarily medical and focuses on managing liver disease and associated metabolic factors. Scheduled follow-up enables the clinical response to be assessed, treatment to be adjusted safely and potential complications to be anticipated.

Where necessary, management is coordinated with other specialist departments for interventional or oncological procedures.

Personalised treatment recommendation Not all liver disorders require immediate treatment. A proper assessment of the stage, risk and progression of the condition makes it possible to determine the appropriate time to intervene or continue monitoring, always based on sound medical criteria and with a view to delivering real benefit.

Support, information and continuity of care

Care is based on a model that prioritises taking the time needed to listen, explain and make clear decisions. Each person receives clear information about their diagnosis, prognosis and the various treatment options.

Ongoing monitoring and coordination with other specialists enable us to provide comprehensive, consistent care based on trust, whilst maintaining clinical rigour and sound decision-making as our guiding principles.

Specialist assessment of liver disease

In the event of abnormal liver function test results or a diagnosis of chronic liver disease, the Unit provides an expert assessment to confirm the clinical picture, carry out the necessary investigations and draw up a personalised follow-up and treatment plan.
