Patient information

Specialty of Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine

The Otorhinolaryngology Department at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital treats patients with conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat, voice, swallowing and the head and neck structures that require specialist medical or surgical assessment.

It deals with both common conditions — such as infections, hearing loss or voice disorders — and complex conditions that require advanced planning and multidisciplinary treatment in a hospital setting.

The department combines clinical expertise, specialised diagnostic technology and treatment approaches based on scientific evidence. The aim is to establish precise treatment indications and design personalised plans based on the nature and complexity of each condition.

Direct referral to the area of greatest expertise Depending on the predominant symptom or the condition identified, the assessment is carried out in the relevant specialist area, enabling an expert approach from the very first consultation. An expert assessment is recommended when symptoms persist, recur or do not improve with initial treatment.

Symptoms requiring assessment by an ENT specialist

A consultation is recommended in cases of persistent nasal obstruction, recurrent sinusitis, prolonged hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, hearing loss, vertigo or neck injuries requiring specific investigation.

Depending on the symptom or the condition identified, the patient is assessed within the relevant subspeciality, ensuring an expert approach from the outset. This organisational structure enables us to distinguish between inflammatory processes and structural lesions, to accurately identify when surgery is indicated, and to define a treatment strategy tailored to each clinical situation.

Areas of clinical sub-specialisation

To provide more specialised and well-coordinated care, the Unit’s work is organised into two complementary clinical areas, each focusing on specific groups of conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat and skull base.

Otology, Otoneurology and Otoneurosurgery

This area focuses on disorders of the ear and balance, ranging from hearing loss and chronic infections to tumours of the pontocerebellar angle. It integrates the medical and surgical management of conditions affecting the middle ear, inner ear and lateral skull base, using advanced anatomical planning and specialised techniques.

Rhinology, Laryngology and Voice

This area deals with nasal and sinus conditions, voice disorders, swallowing difficulties and certain head and neck injuries. The aim is to establish an accurate diagnosis and determine, on a case-by-case basis, whether the most appropriate treatment is medical or surgical, coordinating hospital care where the complexity of the condition so requires.

Clinical follow-up and continuity of care

A follow-up plan is drawn up tailored to each individual case, particularly for surgical procedures, chronic conditions or cancer.

Coordination between departments ensures diagnostic and therapeutic consistency when the condition affects different structures of the head and neck.

Planned evolutionary control Regular monitoring enables clinical changes to be detected and treatment to be adjusted where necessary.

A specialist team and person-centred care

The department comprises ENT specialists with specific expertise in the various areas of the discipline, with experience in endoscopic surgery, ear and skull base surgery, as well as complex head and neck conditions.

From the very first consultation, we take the time needed to explain the diagnosis, the treatment options and the planned course of action. Decision-making is a shared process, particularly in situations requiring surgery or long-term follow-up.
