Specialty of Endocrinology and Nutrition

Specialists in advanced endocrinological diagnosis and treatment

The Endocrinology and Nutrition Department at Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal and metabolic disorders affecting the thyroid, pancreas, adrenal glands, pituitary gland and gonads, as well as conditions related to nutrition and cardiometabolic risk.

Care is organised into highly specialised clinical units, enabling precise intervention in complex conditions such as diabetes, obesity with metabolic disorders, and nodular and functional thyroid disorders. From the initial assessment, a structured analysis of the hormonal and metabolic profile is carried out, followed by an individualised treatment plan and protocol-based follow-up, ensuring clinical stability and a safe course of treatment.

The care model combines diagnostic precision, decisions based on scientific evidence and hospital coordination when the situation requires it.

Expert assessment of hormonal and metabolic disorders

Endocrine disorders can progressively affect metabolic and cardiovascular balance. Impaired glycaemic control, weight changes associated with cardiovascular risk, thyroid dysfunction or complex hormonal disorders require specialist assessment and structured management.

This specialism is involved when it is necessary to confirm a diagnosis, redefine a treatment strategy or address situations that are difficult to manage clinically. An endocrinological assessment enables the hormonal cause of the problem to be identified and a treatment plan tailored to the individual’s profile to be established.

Hormonal balance requires assessment Many metabolic disorders have an endocrine aetiology that is not always obvious. A specialist assessment makes it possible to identify underlying hormonal imbalances and avoid incomplete or non-specific treatments.

Structured clinical process and individualised treatment planning

The care process begins with a specialist consultation during which the patient’s medical history, hormonal and metabolic profile, comorbidities and associated risk factors are reviewed.

Diagnostic tests are ordered in accordance with sound clinical criteria and enable the nature of the endocrine disorder to be precisely defined. Based on this information, a personalised treatment strategy is established, which may include pharmacological treatment, a structured nutritional programme, the use of advanced technology or coordination with other surgical specialities.

For chronic conditions such as diabetes, metabolic obesity or thyroid disorders, follow-up is organised according to established protocols to maintain clinical control and prevent complications, with treatment adjusted as the condition progresses.

Highly specialised clinical units

The speciality is organised into distinct units, enabling each area of endocrinology to be addressed with technical depth and coordinated care.

Obesity and Cardiometabolic Risk

The Obesity and Cardiometabolic Risk Unit addresses excess weight associated with metabolic disorders and increased cardiovascular risk.

The assessment includes advanced body composition analysis, a structured evaluation of cardiovascular risk and a comprehensive assessment of the metabolic profile. Treatment combines structured nutritional intervention, optimisation of medication and, where indicated, coordination with bariatric surgery.

The aim is to improve metabolic parameters and reduce cardiovascular risk in a sustained manner, going beyond weight loss alone.

Diabetes and Technological Monitoring

The Diabetes and Technological Monitoring Unit carries out the diagnosis and advanced management of diabetes through structured metabolic assessment and the application of technology guided by expert judgement.

It addresses cases of new-onset diabetes, metabolic decompensation, inadequate control or the need for advanced therapeutic optimisation. It incorporates continuous glucose monitoring systems, analysis of glycaemic variability and individualised adjustment of insulin therapy, including insulin pumps and automated hybrid systems where indicated.

Every therapeutic decision is based on objective data and on a treatment plan aimed at achieving sustained metabolic control and preventing complications.

Thyroid Unit

The Thyroid Unit specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders and nodular thyroid disease using high-resolution technology and expert endocrinological judgement.

It addresses hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, autoimmune thyroiditis and thyroid nodules, incorporating a comprehensive hormonal assessment, high-definition thyroid ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) where indicated. In selected cases, molecular testing is incorporated to reduce diagnostic uncertainty.

The treatment strategy may include adjustment of medication, planned follow-up or coordination with the Endocrine Surgery department when the need for surgery is clearly established.

Standardised monitoring of chronic conditions In conditions such as diabetes, metabolic obesity or thyroid disorders, structured management helps to maintain clinical stability and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Expert medical team and person-centred care

The department comprises endocrinologists with specific expertise in each area. Coordination with Endocrine Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiology and other specialities enables us to manage complex cases within a structured hospital setting.

Follow-up is ongoing and tailored to the chronic nature of many endocrine conditions. We take the time needed to explain the diagnosis, review treatment objectives and adjust the plan in line with clinical progress.

This approach combines scientific rigour, structured planning and person-centred care, providing clinical assurance and medical support throughout the entire care process.

Specialist assessment in Endocrinology and Nutrition

An expert assessment enables us to analyse a patient’s hormonal and metabolic profile, confirm the diagnosis and determine the most appropriate treatment for each individual case.
