Patient information
The Obesity and Cardiometabolic Risk Unit at Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital, led by Dr Susana Monereo, offers a specialist assessment for people who are overweight or obese and who have metabolic disorders, high cardiovascular risk or difficulties in achieving stable weight control over time.
The Unit addresses situations where excess weight is associated with conditions such as high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes or fatty liver disease, amongst other metabolic disorders. The aim is to rigorously assess each case and draw up a structured treatment plan, designed to improve metabolic control, reduce cardiovascular risk and promote better health in the medium and long term.
This assessment is recommended for people with abdominal obesity, metabolic syndrome, progression of cardiovascular risk factors or repeated failure of conventional dietary interventions.
The Unit analyses not only body weight, but also fat distribution, muscle mass, possible sarcopenia and the presence of subclinical organ damage. This approach enables therapeutic decisions to be made based on objective data and not solely on body mass index.
Excess weight may be a visible sign of an underlying metabolic disorder. For this reason, each case is assessed on an individual basis, taking into account personal medical history, inflammatory profile, cardiovascular risk and functional status.
Among the conditions that most frequently require specialist assessment are:
Obesity with metabolic comorbidities.
Metabolic syndrome.
Type 2 diabetes associated with excess weight.
Metabolic fatty liver disease.
Persistent dyslipidaemia.
High blood pressure linked to obesity.
Loss of muscle mass associated with obesity (sarcopenic obesity).
Each condition is assessed according to sound clinical criteria, with a treatment plan tailored to the individual’s specific circumstances.

The assessment begins with a detailed medical consultation during which medical history, lifestyle habits, weight trends and a comprehensive metabolic profile are reviewed.
The Unit utilises body composition analysis tools based on advanced bioimpedance analysis and nutritional ultrasound, enabling the assessment of fat mass, muscle mass, visceral fat distribution and the presence of hepatic steatosis. A structured assessment of overall cardiovascular risk is also carried out.
This approach provides a more accurate picture than weight alone, facilitating treatment decisions tailored to each individual’s metabolic profile.
Treatment may include structured nutritional intervention, lifestyle modification, optimisation of medication and, where indicated, assessment of surgical options.
The aim is not merely to reduce weight, but to improve metabolic parameters, reduce cardiovascular risk and preserve functional muscle mass.
The treatment plan is reviewed periodically and adapted in line with clinical progress and therapeutic response.
The Unit comprises specialists in Endocrinology and Nutrition, with extensive experience in the clinical management of obesity and cardiometabolic risk.
The care model provides continuous support from the initial assessment, with regular check-ups to monitor changes in weight, metabolic parameters and cardiovascular risk factors, adjusting the treatment plan according to the clinical response.
During follow-up appointments, medical decisions are explained, queries are addressed and realistic, clinically appropriate goals are set. Personalised follow-up allows the strategy to be progressively adapted, reinforces adherence to treatment and helps to consolidate sustainable lifestyle changes.
This approach combines scientific rigour, structured planning and person-centred clinical care, within a highly specialised healthcare setting.
A medical assessment enables us to analyse body composition, estimate cardiovascular risk and determine the most appropriate treatment strategy based on each individual’s metabolic profile.
