Proctology Surgery Unit

Specialism in anorectal pathology

The Proctology Surgery Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is a highly specialised department dedicated to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the rectum and anal canal.

Its work is carried out in accordance with strict criteria regarding medical indications, surgical safety and the preservation of function. Clinical practice is focused on addressing conditions with a significant impact on function through individualised assessment and rigorous treatment planning.

Symptoms requiring specialist assessment Persistent pain, recurrent infections or chronic discharge may indicate a condition requiring specialist assessment. This assessment makes it possible to identify the actual functional risk and determine whether there is a specific indication for surgery.

What conditions does the Unit treat?

The unit treats patients with the following proctological conditions:

  • Symptomatic haemorrhoids

  • Chronic anal fissure

  • Anal fistulas

  • Perianal abscesses

  • Pilonidal disease

These are conditions that can cause pain, bleeding or recurrent infections and which, as they progress, significantly affect quality of life.

The clinical aim is to establish an accurate diagnosis and determine the most appropriate treatment strategy based on the extent of the condition, the anatomical complexity and the functional impact.

Expert assessment and treatment decision

The assessment begins with a detailed medical history and a specific proctological examination. Where necessary, further investigations such as endoanal ultrasound or pelvic MRI are carried out, particularly in complex or recurrent cases.

The treatment plan is determined after integrating the clinical and radiological findings, whilst analysing the risks, benefits and impact on continence. Not all lesions require surgical intervention. The decision is based on specialist expertise and the expected actual clinical benefit.

Minimally invasive surgery

The unit combines conventional surgical techniques with minimally invasive procedures, including high-precision laser surgery, always carried out following an individual assessment.

For certain anal fistulas, the FiLaC (Fistula Laser Closure) technique may be used, which aims to achieve controlled closure of the fistula tract whilst preserving the anal sphincter. In pilonidal disease, the SiLaC (Sinus Laser Closure) technique allows for a less invasive approach in selected cases. In appropriately indicated haemorrhoids, laser haemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) can reduce the volume of the affected tissue without the need for extensive resections.

Many procedures are carried out on an outpatient or day-case basis, within protocols for optimised recovery and structured follow-up.

Individualised surgical decision Anorectal surgery requires precision in determining the indication and respect for sphincter function. Specialist experience enables surgeons to determine when to operate, which technique to use and at what stage, prioritising safety, functional control and genuine clinical benefit.

Specialist care and ongoing monitoring

The unit comprises surgeons who specialise specifically in anorectal conditions and have experience in complex and recurrent cases. Their practice combines technical expertise, sound judgement in determining the need for surgery, and rigorous surgical planning.

The care model is based on organised and safe care, with time set aside to explain the diagnosis, outline treatment options and support the decision-making process, ensuring clinical continuity throughout all stages of treatment.
