Specialty of Gynaecology

Specialist care throughout a woman’s life

The Gynaecology Department at Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of gynaecological health at every stage of life, from adolescence through to the menopause and later life.

It is involved in the prevention, investigation and management of functional disorders, structural uterine and ovarian conditions, hormonal disorders and pelvic floor dysfunction through rigorous clinical assessment and individualised treatment planning.

Each case is analysed in accordance with sound medical criteria and current scientific evidence, with decisions tailored to the age, reproductive status and specific needs of each woman.

Prevention and early detection of gynaecological conditions

Prevention is a cornerstone of gynaecological practice.

Our specialists carry out regular check-ups, which include a clinical examination, cervical smear tests and human papillomavirus (HPV) screening in accordance with current guidelines, with the aim of identifying cervical lesions at an early stage.

We also provide guidance on HPV vaccination, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and the promotion of gynaecological health among adolescents and young women.

In the field of early detection of breast conditions, we carry out clinical examinations and individual risk assessments, and determine the need for imaging tests in coordination with the relevant specialist departments where indicated.

This preventive approach enables risks to be anticipated and action to be taken at an early stage, reducing the likelihood of future complications.

Gynaecological assessment according to reproductive stage

Gynaecological assessment varies depending on a woman’s stage of life. In adolescence, the focus is on menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain or early hormonal disorders.

During the reproductive years, the assessment includes preventive gynaecological check-ups, investigation of cycle irregularities, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts or polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as pre-pregnancy assessment where indicated.

During the perimenopausal and menopausal stages, hormonal changes, abnormal bleeding, vasomotor symptoms and pelvic floor disorders are investigated, and personalised treatment strategies are established.

This stage-based approach allows the diagnostic and therapeutic assessment to be tailored to the biological reality of each stage.

Every diagnosis deserves time and clarity.

Gynaecological conditions we most frequently assess

The conditions that most frequently lead to a specialist consultation include:

  • Menstrual cycle irregularities.

  • Endometriosis.

  • Uterine fibroids.

  • Ovarian cysts.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome.

  • Hormonal disorders.

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction.

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding at any stage of life.

Each condition is assessed through clinical examination, high-resolution gynaecological ultrasound and additional tests where indicated, with treatment plans tailored to the individual’s profile.

Comprehensive diagnostic assessment and personalised treatment

Reasons for consulting a gynaecologist can vary widely, ranging from routine check-ups to functional symptoms, pelvic pain, hormonal imbalances, abnormal bleeding or findings detected in previous investigations.

The assessment is tailored to each clinical situation and includes a specialist gynaecological examination, high-resolution ultrasound and additional tests where indicated, enabling us to establish an accurate diagnosis or rule out any significant conditions.

The therapeutic approach may be conservative, pharmacological, hormonal or surgical, depending on the nature of the problem and the patient’s stage of life. Where surgical treatment is indicated, minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy or, in selected cases, hysteroscopy are prioritised, with the aim of minimising tissue trauma and promoting a faster recovery.

Each decision is made following an individualised assessment of the clinical benefit, the available alternatives and the patient’s informed preferences.

Multidisciplinary Coordination and Reproductive Health

The department works in coordination with Endocrinology, Urology and Radiology in situations requiring a comprehensive assessment.

It also plays a part in pre-pregnancy gynaecological assessments and the initial family planning consultation, ensuring support and continuity of care.

Clinical support and personalised follow-up

The care model includes regular check-ups tailored to each stage of life and each diagnosis.

Time is taken to explain hormonal changes, treatment options and the potential risks and benefits of each intervention, thereby promoting informed and safe decision-making.

Structured follow-up allows treatment to be adjusted in line with clinical progress and ensures continuity of care over time.

This approach combines medical rigour, therapeutic innovation and care centred on women and their life journey.
