Specialty of International Traveller Enquiries

The International Traveller’s Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital offers specialised care tailored to each stage of the journey: pre-departure medical preparation, remote consultations whilst at the destination, and a health assessment upon return.
Every journey presents different circumstances. The destination, itinerary, duration, planned activities and each person’s state of health enable us to provide personalised care and anticipate the most important medical decisions.
Travelling safely
Every journey presents different circumstances. The destination is important, but so too are the itinerary, the length of stay, the planned activities, access to healthcare and each person’s state of health.
For this reason, Travel Medicine is not limited to a single recommendation. Care may begin before departure, continue should an incident arise whilst travelling, and be completed upon return should a health problem arise or there be any exposure that needs to be assessed.
With this approach, the International Traveller Unit supports travellers at the various stages when they may require care.
Each stage of your journey may require a different kind of support. Go straight to the most suitable option, whether you’re preparing for your trip, are already at your destination, or have returned home.

We assess your destination, itinerary, vaccination status, regular medication and health circumstances in order to anticipate risks and put in place the most appropriate preventive measures before you set off.

If, whilst travelling, you experience a health problem, have a query about your medication or are concerned about exposure to something, you can request a remote medical consultation and receive advice on what to do next.

If a health problem arises after your trip, or if you are concerned about any exposure that may have occurred during your stay, we can assess your situation, taking into account your destination and the full context of your trip.
Two people may be travelling to the same country yet require different recommendations. The length of stay, stopovers, type of accommodation, planned activities and personal circumstances can significantly alter the needs for prevention and care.
For this reason, the assessment incorporates three dimensions that enable us to understand each journey as a whole.

Countries and regions to be visited, time of year, climate, altitude, rural or urban setting, and access to healthcare.

Length of stay, stopovers, accommodation, planned activities and reason for the trip.

Age, medical history, regular treatments, pregnancy, allergies, immunosuppression and previous vaccinations.
Travel medicine goes beyond vaccination. Your destination, state of health, regular treatments and planned activities can all influence the recommendations and medical decisions you should make whilst travelling.
Each assessment is carried out on an individual basis, as no two journeys — nor no two travellers — are exactly the same.
The reason for, duration and nature of the journey also influence each traveller’s needs.
Family holidays, business trips, extended stays or remote destinations may require different planning and recommendations tailored to each situation.
Care tailored to the needs of adults, children, teenagers or older people.
Efficient planning of vaccinations, treatments and documentation for frequent travel or last-minute trips.
Continuity of treatment, availability of medication and access to healthcare during longer periods.
Preparation tailored to healthcare access, planned activities and environmental conditions.
Following the assessment, we draw up a personalised plan with the most relevant recommendations for that trip.
Depending on each traveller’s needs, this may include vaccinations, malaria prevention, protection against disease vectors, medication and a first-aid kit, health documentation and guidelines for your stay.

Some journeys require particularly careful medical preparation. Chronic conditions, certain treatments, pregnancy, immunosuppression or travel to remote destinations may necessitate a more comprehensive assessment than that provided by a standard pre-travel consultation.
The integration of the International Traveller’s Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital provides access, where indicated, to the hospital’s diagnostic resources and enables care to be coordinated with other specialists.
This capacity for coordination is one of the key distinguishing features of the consultation and enables us to offer recommendations tailored to medical situations that cannot be resolved through general advice alone.
The recommendations are tailored to each traveller’s state of health, medical history and personal circumstances.
Where necessary, the clinic works in coordination with other specialist departments at the hospital.
The assessment may be supplemented by laboratory tests, serological tests or other diagnostic investigations.
Care can continue when check-ups, tests, coordination with other specialists or follow-up measures are required.
Some health problems may begin whilst travelling or become apparent after you return. If, on your return, you develop symptoms or are concerned about any exposure that may have occurred during your stay, we can carry out a specific assessment, taking into account your destination, the time elapsed and the full context of your trip.
Where appropriate, the assessment can be coordinated with the hospital’s diagnostic facilities and various specialist departments.
