The unit
The Interventional Neuroradiology Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital treats cerebral vascular diseases using minimally invasive endovascular techniques, enabling the treatment of aneurysms, malformations and other complex lesions without the need for open surgery.

Patient information
The Interventional Neuroradiology Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital treats patients with cerebral and spinal vascular diseases requiring image-guided, minimally invasive treatment. It intervenes when the condition affects intracranial arteries or veins and requires a highly precise therapeutic strategy aimed at reducing neurological risk and optimising functional recovery.
The unit treats cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural fistulae, chronic subdural haematoma suitable for embolisation, intracranial venous stenosis and certain tumour lesions requiring vascular assessment prior to surgery.
A specialist assessment is indicated when there is a risk of haemorrhage, progressive neurological deterioration, or when an endovascular alternative to open surgery is being considered. The aim is to accurately determine the vascular anatomy, the mechanism of the lesion and the associated risk, in order to establish the most appropriate treatment.
The process begins with a specialist consultation and a detailed review of previous test results. Where indicated, diagnostic angiographic studies, CT angiography or MRI angiography are carried out to accurately characterise the vascular lesion.
Each case is analysed individually, taking into account the anatomical complexity, the clinical situation and the risk-benefit balance. Treatment planning is coordinated with the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Anaesthetology and Intensive Care where the case requires it.

Procedures are carried out in a hybrid operating theatre using high-resolution digital angiography systems. Microcatheters and endovascular devices are used to enable precise intervention in hard-to-reach areas of the brain without the need for open surgery.
The approach may include embolisation of aneurysms using coils or flow-diverting devices, treatment of arteriovenous malformations and fistulae, embolisation of the middle meningeal artery in chronic subdural haematoma, placement of venous stents in selected cases of stenosis, or pre-surgical embolisation of hypervascular tumours.
Following the procedure, a programme of clinical and radiological follow-up is established to confirm that the lesion has been completely removed and to detect any possible recurrences or late complications.
Regular monitoring allows treatment to be adjusted where necessary and enables care to be coordinated with other specialities involved in the neurological process.
The unit comprises interventional neuroradiologists who specialise specifically in cerebral vascular pathology and have extensive experience in highly technically complex procedures.
The team takes the time necessary to explain the diagnosis, the proposed procedure and the associated risks, thereby facilitating shared and fully informed decision-making.
Close coordination with the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Intensive Care ensures continuity of care throughout all stages of the process, from the initial assessment to follow-up care.
The combination of technical expertise, rigorous planning and clinical support enables us to safely manage complex cerebral vascular conditions, with a focus on neurological stability and functional recovery.
The assessment enables the vascular diagnosis to be confirmed, treatment options to be analysed, and an individualised endovascular strategy to be defined, based on rigorous planning and criteria ensuring maximum neurological safety.
