Patient information

General Neurology Unit

The General Neurology Unit treats patients with newly-onset neurological symptoms or with previously diagnosed conditions that require an initial expert assessment and clear clinical guidance. It acts as the central hub of the Neurology Department, coordinating diagnosis, defining the treatment plan and referring patients to specialist units when the condition so requires.

Initial assessment of new-onset neurological symptoms

The unit is aimed at people presenting with symptoms such as loss of strength, sensory disturbances, balance disorders, epileptic seizures, persistent headaches or cognitive changes. It also cares for patients with a previous diagnosis of neurological conditions who require structured follow-up.

Conditions assessed in this context include multiple sclerosis, stroke, epilepsy, peripheral neuropathies, balance disorders and neuropathic pain, amongst others.

The unit’s main function is to establish an accurate diagnosis, determine the severity of the condition and refer the patient to the most appropriate care pathway within the Neurology department.

Diagnosis, treatment and coordination with highly specialised units

As the organising hub of the Department, the General Neurology Unit is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of general neurological conditions, acting as the point of entry and providing clinical guidance within the field of neurology.

Where the complexity of a case so requires, patients may be referred to highly specialised units dealing with memory disorders, movement disorders, headaches, neuromuscular disorders or sleep disorders. This organisational structure ensures that each patient is cared for by the team with the most experience in their specific condition, thereby avoiding delays and optimising diagnostic and therapeutic accuracy.

In the case of stroke, for example, the unit carries out neurological follow-up, treatment adjustment and personalised preventive planning, coordinating care with other specialities to reduce the risk of recurrence and maintain clinical stability.

When is a neurological assessment recommended? Symptoms such as loss of strength, speech difficulties, epileptic seizures or cognitive changes require expert assessment. An early diagnosis enables treatment to be started and complications to be avoided.

Neurological assessment and diagnostic tests

The process begins with a detailed medical history and a comprehensive neurological examination. Based on the findings from the consultation, further tests are requested where necessary, such as a brain MRI, neurophysiological studies or specific laboratory tests.

The aim is to accurately identify the cause of the symptoms and draw up a clear treatment plan. Every decision is based on up-to-date clinical guidelines, prioritising patient safety and avoiding unnecessary tests.

Clinical management and planned follow-up

The unit is responsible for the treatment and follow-up of general neurological conditions where these do not require specialist care, and liaises with specialist units in cases where such care is required.

The treatment plan is adapted to the patient’s clinical progress, adjusting medication, assessing response and preventing complications. Regular follow-up enables early detection of changes and allows the treatment strategy to be modified where necessary.

Clinical follow-up and ongoing support

The care model combines clinical expertise with organised, accessible and person-centred care. From the very first consultation, sufficient time is set aside to listen carefully to the patient’s symptoms, explain the diagnosis or clinical suspicion, and clearly outline the plan of investigation and any potential referrals to other specialist units.

The patient plays an active role in decision-making, understanding the reason behind each test, each adjustment to treatment and every step of the care process. We encourage open dialogue to address any concerns and reduce the uncertainty that often accompanies neurological symptoms.

Where the condition requires long-term follow-up, a clear schedule of check-ups is established, with regular monitoring of progress and seamless coordination between specialists. This ongoing support enables treatment to be adapted to the patient’s clinical progress and provides stability and reassurance over time.

Comprehensive assessment in general neurology

In the event of newly-onset neurological symptoms or a need for clinical follow-up, the Unit carries out a comprehensive assessment to confirm the diagnosis and determine the most appropriate care pathway.
