Medicine to diagnose and treat. Compassion to support patients at every stage.
The Memory Disorders Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital carries out specialist assessments of persistent memory loss and cognitive decline, distinguishing between normal ageing, mild cognitive impairment and dementia, and drawing up a treatment plan tailored to each stage of the condition’s progression.
The Memory Disorders Unit treats people who experience persistent memory loss, language difficulties, behavioural changes or cognitive impairments that require an expert neurological assessment. It intervenes from the very first signs to establish an accurate diagnosis and distinguish between mild cognitive impairment and established neurodegenerative conditions.
Specialist assessment for persistent memory loss and progressive cognitive changes
The unit is aimed at patients with suspected Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementias, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia or other mild cognitive impairment syndromes.
A specialist assessment is particularly recommended when memory changes begin to interfere with daily life, cause concern amongst family members or progress over time. The aim is to clearly identify the cause of the problem and establish an appropriate action plan from the earliest stages.

Specific programmes for the study and treatment of Alzheimer’s
Care tailored to each individual’s situation
Alzheimer’s disease may require different levels of assessment depending on the symptoms, previous tests carried out and the clinical stage of each individual.
For this reason, the Memory Disorders Unit offers three specific programmes that enable an initial assessment to be carried out, an accurate diagnosis to be established, or access to anti-amyloid treatment where indicated.
Each programme addresses a different situation and may be the appropriate point of entry depending on each patient’s needs.
Early Alzheimer’s Screening Programme
An initial assessment for people who have started to notice minor changes in their memory, have a family history of the condition, or wish to find out whether there are any signs that would suggest they should undergo a more comprehensive examination.
Alzheimer’s Diagnosis Programme
A specialist assessment for people with cognitive symptoms, where previous findings require a more comprehensive evaluation or where a diagnosis needs to be confirmed, supplemented or clarified.
Alzheimer’s Anti-Amyloid Treatment Programme
A specialised programme for patients with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease for whom anti-amyloid treatment has been considered.
Are you unsure which programme is best suited to your situation?
The team at the Memory Disorders Unit can advise you, taking into account your symptoms, any previous tests and the clinical information available.
Differential diagnosis between normal ageing and dementia
Memory problems can arise from a wide variety of causes. For this reason, the assessment is not based on a single test, but on a combination of the patient’s medical history, cognitive assessment and the diagnostic tests deemed appropriate for each individual patient.
The assessment may include neuropsychological evaluation, advanced neuroimaging and biomarkers, enabling a distinction to be made between normal ageing, mild cognitive impairment and various neurodegenerative processes.
Each case is interpreted taking into account the symptoms, medical history, family background and how the condition has progressed over time.
An accurate diagnosis enables us to understand what is happening and to guide subsequent decisions with greater certainty.
Providing information with accuracy and empathy is part of the treatment.
Treatment plan for mild cognitive impairment and established dementia
Treatment is tailored to the diagnosis, the stage of the disease and the individual’s needs.
It may include medication, cognitive stimulation and measures aimed at preserving functional independence, as well as coordination with other medical departments where behavioural, motor or vascular symptoms are present, or where other associated needs arise.
The plan evolves alongside the patient. Treatment decisions are reviewed as the clinical situation changes, anticipating needs and adapting the follow-up care accordingly.
Care is tailored to each stage of cognitive declineThe progression of memory problems varies. Clinical monitoring enables treatment and support to be tailored to the patient’s needs at any given time.
Planned clinical follow-up and ongoing family support
The care provided combines clinical precision with a close and respectful relationship. From the very first consultations, the team takes the time to explain what has been found, what can be expected and what decisions may be necessary, addressing any concerns both the patient and their family may have.
The family is an integral part of the care process. The Unit provides guidance on the patient’s progress, day-to-day management and the decisions that may arise at each stage, tailoring the information to the current clinical situation and avoiding unnecessary information overload.
Follow-up through regular check-ups allows treatment to be adjusted and ensures ongoing support over time.
Specialist assessment of cognitive impairment and memory disorders
In cases of persistent memory changes, cognitive impairment or suspected neurodegenerative disease, the Memory Disorders Unit can carry out a comprehensive assessment and recommend the most appropriate diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for each individual case.
