Patient information
The Neurovascular Microsurgery Unit treats patients with cerebral vascular diseases who require highly specialised surgical treatment to prevent haemorrhages, preserve cerebral circulation and avoid serious neurological sequelae. It treats conditions affecting intracranial arteries and veins where the anatomical complexity demands advanced microsurgical expertise.
The unit is aimed at people diagnosed with intracranial aneurysms, vascular malformations or lesions with a risk of haemorrhage. A specialist assessment is particularly recommended where there is a risk of rupture, a history of cerebral haemorrhage or complex findings on imaging tests.
The treatment decision is based on a precise analysis of the size, location and behaviour of the lesion, as well as the patient’s clinical condition. Not all malformations require immediate intervention; expert judgement is essential in determining the appropriate timing and strategy.
Each case is assessed on an individual basis, taking into account clinical, radiological and functional data.
The Unit treats, amongst other conditions:
Intracranial aneurysms
Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
Cerebral cavernomas
Arteriovenous dural fistulas
The need for cerebral revascularisation in selected cases
The indication for surgery is determined following careful assessment of the balance between the natural risk of the lesion and the risk of treatment, always prioritising neurological safety.

The assessment begins with a specialist consultation and a detailed review of imaging studies such as MRI, CT angiography or cerebral angiography. These studies enable us to analyse the vascular anatomy and plan the safest strategy.
Surgical planning incorporates neuronavigation, three-dimensional reconstruction and functional assessment where necessary. Cases are discussed as a team with neuroradiologists, intensive care specialists and neuroanaesthetists to define a coordinated and technically sound strategy.
Procedures are carried out using state-of-the-art surgical microscopes, which allow us to work on vascular structures measuring just a few millimetres with the utmost precision.
Advanced techniques are used to preserve healthy blood vessels and maintain adequate cerebral circulation throughout the procedure, minimising the risk of neurological sequelae.
The care model combines microsurgical expertise, multidisciplinary coordination and appropriate clinical follow-up. From the very first consultation, the team takes the time needed to clearly explain the diagnosis, the inherent risk associated with the condition and the various treatment options, thereby facilitating an informed and calm decision-making process.
The surgical plan is discussed with the patient and their close family and friends where necessary, addressing any queries directly and in an understandable manner. This process enables the patient to approach the operation with greater confidence and peace of mind.
During hospitalisation and in the post-operative period, the team maintains close supervision with scheduled neurological and radiological monitoring. Coordination between neurosurgeons, the intensive care unit and the specialists involved ensures continuity of care.
The unit combines technical precision, sound clinical judgement and constant compassionate support, all aimed at preserving neurological function and quality of life.
When faced with a diagnosis of an aneurysm, vascular malformation or a lesion carrying a risk of haemorrhage, the Unit carries out a comprehensive assessment to determine the safest and most appropriate treatment strategy for each individual case.
