Onco Center
The unit
The Specialised Ovarian Cancer Unit provides surgical treatment for ovarian cancer in its early, advanced and recurrent stages, using highly complex oncological surgery aimed at removing as much of the visible disease as possible (cytoreduction). In selected cases, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is incorporated during the procedure, as part of a structured treatment strategy and ongoing follow-up.

Patient information
The Specialised Ovarian Cancer Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is a highly specialised department dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of ovarian cancer. Its work focuses on providing an advanced surgical and oncological approach, underpinned by expert medical judgement and individualised planning at every stage of the disease.
The unit cares for women with suspected or confirmed ovarian cancer, whether in the early stages, at an advanced stage or experiencing a relapse.
The clinical aim is to define a precise treatment strategy from the outset, based on the extent of the tumour, its biological characteristics and each patient’s clinical situation.
The unit manages both initial treatments and second opinions in complex situations requiring highly specialised surgery or a reassessment of the treatment plan.
Certain forms of ovarian cancer require expert surgical assessment and multidisciplinary coordination, particularly where there is peritoneal involvement, advanced disease or a need for complex techniques.
The Unit specifically addresses:
Epithelial ovarian cancer in early and advanced stages
Peritoneal carcinomatosis of ovarian origin
Recurrences of ovarian cancer
Malignant or high-risk ovarian tumours
Cases requiring complex cytoreductive surgery
Each clinical situation is analysed on a case-by-case basis, prioritising the specific indication for each type of case.
The initial assessment includes a full clinical examination and imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan or MRI.
Pathological analysis and other supplementary tests enable the extent of the disease to be determined with precision.
Treatment decisions are made within a multidisciplinary setting, bringing together the clinical and diagnostic disciplines involved in the cancer care process. This coordinated approach enables the correct surgical indication to be identified and a safe, structured treatment plan to be devised, based on expert judgement.

Surgery is a cornerstone of ovarian cancer treatment. The unit has expertise in complex cytoreductive surgery, aimed at removing as much of the tumour burden as possible where indicated.
In selected cases, treatment may be supplemented with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), integrated into a carefully defined treatment plan.
Furthermore, minimally invasive surgical techniques, including advanced oncological laparoscopy, are performed on suitably selected patients. In cases of locally advanced disease or specific relapses, procedures of the highest technical complexity are undertaken, always in accordance with strict criteria regarding indications and safety.
The unit comprises specialists with a primary focus on gynaecological oncological surgery and extensive experience in advanced-stage disease.
They work in close coordination with the various departments involved in the care process, ensuring a comprehensive and structured approach to each case.
The care model combines rigorous planning, appropriate treatment recommendations and ongoing clinical support. Technical complexity is managed within a framework of safety and medical responsibility, enabling each patient to understand their situation through clear information and sufficient time, and to play an active role in decisions affecting their treatment.
In the event of a confirmed diagnosis or a well-founded suspicion, the Unit provides an expert assessment to review the case, complete the staging assessment and determine the most appropriate therapeutic and surgical strategy within a multidisciplinary setting.
