Patient information
The Endoscopic Ear Surgery Unit treats patients with middle ear conditions requiring specialised surgical treatment, particularly where a minimally invasive approach via the external auditory canal is possible.
It intervenes when it is necessary to restore hearing function, eliminate chronic disease or correct structural abnormalities of the ear with the utmost anatomical precision and preservation of function.
The unit is aimed at people with cholesteatoma, tympanic membrane perforations, otosclerosis and other middle ear conditions that affect hearing or cause recurrent infections.
This assessment is particularly recommended in cases of progressive hearing loss, persistent discharge, vertigo associated with structural pathology, or where reconstructive surgery is required. The initial aim is to confirm the need for surgery, assess the functional status of the ear and determine the most appropriate surgical technique for each individual case.
The process begins with a specialist consultation that includes microscopic and endoscopic examination of the ear, audiometric tests and imaging studies where indicated.
These tools enable us to assess the extent of the condition, analyse the integrity of the ossicular chain and examine the surrounding structures. Based on this assessment, a personalised surgical plan is drawn up, taking into account the patient’s anatomy and functional objectives.
Where there are different technical alternatives, the options are compared based on criteria of safety, efficacy and hearing preservation.

In selected cases, the unit performs fully endoscopic ear surgery using high-definition endoscopes inserted through the external auditory canal. This approach avoids visible incisions and widens the field of view, facilitating access to anatomical areas that are difficult to visualise using conventional techniques.
Our expertise in microscopic surgery allows us to combine both approaches when clinically indicated. The surgical aim is to remove the disease and, where possible, reconstruct the structures responsible for hearing, whilst maintaining a high standard of anatomical safety.
Following the operation, a schedule of follow-up appointments is drawn up to assess healing, check the stability of the middle ear and monitor hearing progress using specific tests.
In conditions such as cholesteatoma, which may require long-term monitoring, a structured follow-up programme enables the early detection of any potential recurrence and allows for swift action to be taken when necessary.
Ear surgery is not limited to the technical procedure itself. From the very first consultation, we take the time needed to explain the diagnosis, the reason for surgery and realistic expectations regarding hearing function following the procedure.
Each patient is made fully aware of the type of technique to be used, the aftercare required and the planned schedule of follow-up appointments. Where there are different options available, the decision is made jointly, weighing up the benefits, risks and hearing objectives.
Support continues throughout the post-operative follow-up period. Clarifying any doubts, providing clear information and maintaining clinical stability are essential parts of our care model.
In cases of middle ear disorders where surgery may be indicated, the Unit carries out a specialist assessment aimed at confirming the need for surgery and determining the most appropriate technique to preserve hearing.
