Patient information

Otology Unit

The Otology Unit treats adult and paediatric patients with ear conditions that affect hearing, balance or the structural integrity of the middle and inner ear.

It intervenes when hearing loss, recurrent infections or anatomical abnormalities require a specialist assessment to establish an accurate diagnosis and determine the most appropriate treatment for each case.

Specialist assessment for hearing loss or structural ear conditions

The unit is aimed at people with conductive or sensorineural hearing loss, otosclerosis, cholesteatoma, perforated eardrums, sequelae of chronic otitis or congenital malformations of the ear.

The assessment is particularly recommended in cases of progressive hearing loss, recurrent infections, persistent discharge or suspected complex structural pathology. The initial aim is to identify the exact cause of the hearing impairment, distinguish between reversible conditions and those that may require surgical intervention, and establish a personalised treatment plan.

When is a specialist ear assessment required? A specialist assessment is recommended in cases of progressive hearing loss, recurrent infections or persistent symptoms that do not improve with conventional treatment. It helps to distinguish between conditions that can be managed medically and those for which surgery may be indicated.

Comprehensive diagnostic assessment with functional hearing tests

The process begins with a detailed otological consultation, which includes microscopic and endoscopic examination of the ear, as well as audiometric tests and imaging studies where indicated.

These tools enable us to assess hearing function, the mobility of the ossicular chain and the condition of the inner ear. Each case is analysed individually, integrating clinical and functional findings to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Where the complexity of the condition requires it, the assessment is coordinated with other specialist departments to ensure a comprehensive and thorough evaluation.

Determining the most appropriate treatment

The therapeutic approach is tailored to the type of condition identified. In cases of inflammation or infection, specific medical treatment is prescribed with a planned follow-up programme. Where surgery is indicated, the procedure is planned with the aim of eradicating the disease and, wherever possible, preserving or improving hearing function.

The unit has expertise in cholesteatoma surgery, tympanic membrane reconstruction, stapedectomy for otosclerosis and other advanced otological techniques. The choice of procedure is based on sound clinical criteria, prioritising the preservation of essential structures and functional safety.

Assessment and monitoring of hearing function

Following treatment, a schedule of regular check-ups is established to assess clinical progress and hearing stability through audiometric tests.

In chronic conditions such as cholesteatoma, ongoing monitoring is essential to detect any possible recurrences and take early action.

Individualised treatment decision Not all cases of hearing loss require surgery. The decision to operate is made after assessing the type of damage, its progression and realistic expectations for hearing recovery.

Expert, person-centred care

Care is not limited to diagnosis or technical intervention. From the very first consultation, we take the time needed to explain the cause of the hearing loss, its functional impact and the various treatment options available.

Each patient receives clear information about the treatment objectives, the expected improvements and the planned follow-up schedule. Decision-making is a shared process, particularly where there are several medical or surgical alternatives.

Support is provided throughout the entire process, with scheduled check-ups and the availability to answer any questions. The unit combines expert clinical judgement and advanced diagnostic technology within a structured care model, in which clear information, time to decide and the preservation of function are fundamental pillars of care.

Specialist assessment in otology

In cases of hearing loss, persistent infections or suspected structural ear disorders, the Unit carries out a specialist assessment aimed at confirming the diagnosis and determining the most appropriate treatment.
