Patient information
The Otoneurology Unit treats people with vertigo, unsteadiness or persistent balance disorders who require a specialist assessment of the vestibular system.
It intervenes when symptoms interfere with daily life, cause uncertainty when walking or do not improve with initial treatments, and it is necessary to accurately identify whether the cause is peripheral or central.
The unit is aimed at people with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Ménière’s disease, vestibular neuritis, superior semicircular canal dehiscence, chronic vestibular disorders and other balance disorders.
The assessment is particularly recommended when vertigo is recurrent, debilitating or accompanied by hearing loss, tinnitus or associated neurological symptoms.
The initial aim is to establish an accurate diagnosis through a specific clinical examination and targeted functional tests, thereby avoiding non-specific treatments in conditions that require an individualised approach.
The process begins with a detailed medical history and a specific vestibular examination. Where indicated, instrumental tests are carried out to analyse the function of the semicircular canals and the vestibular nerve.
The results are interpreted within the context of the individual’s clinical presentation, distinguishing between peripheral disorders and possible central causes. Based on this information, the most appropriate treatment strategy is determined.
The approach may include specific medical treatment, repositioning manoeuvres for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or planned vestibular rehabilitation programmes combined with specialist physiotherapy.
These interventions promote neurological compensation and improve functional stability. In selected cases that are unresponsive to conservative treatment, specific surgical procedures are considered, with indications determined according to rigorous criteria for functional safety.
The unit also provides structured guidance to patients with tinnitus associated with vestibular disorders.

Many vestibular disorders require ongoing monitoring. A schedule of regular check-ups is established to assess response to treatment, clinical stability and the need for therapeutic adjustments.
In chronic conditions, planned monitoring allows for a stepwise approach to intervention and helps maintain long-term functional stability.
Vertigo causes uncertainty and directly affects personal independence. From the very first consultation, we take the time needed to explain how the vestibular system works, the cause of the symptoms and the treatment options available.
Patients gain an understanding of the mechanism behind their condition and are involved in the decision-making process, particularly where there are different treatment options.
Regular check-ups allow us to adjust treatment and provide stability in an area that directly influences quality of life. The unit combines diagnostic precision and personalised planning within a person-centred care model, providing clear information, structured follow-up and support at every stage.
If you experience persistent vertigo, unsteadiness or are suspected of having a complex vestibular disorder, the Unit carries out a specialist assessment aimed at confirming the diagnosis and determining the most appropriate treatment.
