The Paediatric Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery Unit at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system in children and adolescents.
It treats traumatic injuries, developmental disorders and conditions specific to childhood that require an assessment tailored to the biology of growing bones. It intervenes in cases of deformities, developmental disorders or injuries that may affect future functional development.
Paediatric orthopaedic treatment requires an understanding of the dynamics of skeletal growth and the ability to anticipate its medium- and long-term progression.
The Unit treats both common injuries in children and developmental disorders that may affect the growth of the musculoskeletal system, including:
Fractures and sprains
Sports injuries (ligament and meniscus tears)
Flat feet in children
Scoliosis
Bone growth disorders
Leg length discrepancy
Joint problems specific to childhood
The therapeutic indication is determined following an assessment of age, growth potential, degree of deformity and functional impact.
The Unit has experience in managing highly complex conditions, including:
Developmental dysplasia of the hip
Perthes’ disease
Paediatric bone tumours
Clubfoot
Malformations requiring correction or bone lengthening
Treatment may include corrective surgery for deformities, osteotomies for Perthes’ disease, specific techniques for correcting clubfoot, and procedures aimed at balancing limb length.
Each procedure is planned taking into account the growth phase, skeletal maturation and future functional impact.

The diagnostic process begins with a detailed clinical examination that assesses alignment, joint mobility, gait pattern and motor development.
The treatment strategy may include conservative management using plaster casts, splints or orthoses, or surgical intervention when natural progression does not allow for adequate correction.
The treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s age and expected growth trajectory.
Regular clinical check-ups are carried out to assess the progression of deformities, bone union and the longitudinal alignment of the limbs. In cases of growth abnormalities, long-term follow-up is essential to anticipate potential imbalances and adjust treatment accordingly.
Following treatment, progressive exercise programmes are established to restore mobility, strength and an appropriate gait pattern, whilst respecting the child’s natural development.
The Unit is made up of paediatric orthopaedic specialists with experience in developmental conditions and reconstructive surgery in children.
During consultations, we take the time needed to explain the diagnosis, the expected course of the condition and the available treatment options to the family. We detail the risks, recovery times and possible implications for growth, helping to ensure a clear and calm understanding of the process.
Decision-making is a shared process with parents or guardians, particularly when corrective surgery is being considered.
Clinical support is provided throughout the child or adolescent’s development, with scheduled check-ups that allow treatment to be adjusted in line with their progress.
Coordination between paediatric orthopaedics, paediatric radiology, rehabilitation and other specialities ensures continuity of care throughout all stages of growth.
An expert assessment enables us to analyse growth potential, determine the most appropriate treatment strategy and plan follow-up care aimed at balanced functional development.
