The Radiation Oncology Department at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital treats cancer using high-precision radiotherapy and, in selected cases, incorporates electromodulated hyperthermia as part of individualised treatment strategies aimed at tumour control and the preservation of healthy tissue.

The Radiation Oncology department at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital treats patients with solid tumours in various locations — including the breast, prostate, lung, digestive tract, gynaecological organs and brain, amongst others — where radiotherapy may form part of the cancer treatment.
The department is involved in the care process when it is necessary to determine whether radiotherapy is indicated, at what stage it should be administered, and how it should be incorporated into the overall treatment plan. The aim is to establish a precise strategy, focused on tumour control and the functional preservation of healthy tissues.
The department delivers radiotherapy treatment as part of a comprehensive cancer management strategy, in coordination with the multidisciplinary committee and the other specialist departments involved in each case. The indication, treatment sequence and method of administration are defined in accordance with rigorous clinical criteria, integrating radiotherapy coherently into the treatment plan.
The department is equipped with state-of-the-art radiotherapy systems that enable the radiation to be tailored to the three-dimensional shape of the tumour and its delivery to be verified session by session. This capability is essential for delivering treatment with precision, maintaining clinical safety and preserving healthy tissue as much as possible.
Where treatment requires a combined approach, planning is closely integrated with Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and other relevant specialities, ensuring continuity of care and therapeutic consistency throughout the entire process.
The process begins with a specialist consultation in radiation oncology, during which the diagnosis, imaging studies and overall clinical picture are reviewed. Based on this assessment, a simulation and personalised treatment plan are carried out, enabling the tumour volume and at-risk organs to be precisely delineated.
Each treatment is individually tailored, with the total dose, fractionation and irradiation technique adjusted according to the location, size of the tumour and the clinical characteristics of each patient. This precise planning is essential for delivering radiotherapy with the utmost rigour, optimising therapeutic efficacy and minimising toxicity to healthy tissues.

In selected cases, the Department utilises electromodulated hyperthermia (mEHT), a complementary cancer treatment modality that uses controlled heat and modulated electromagnetic fields to act on tumour tissue and enhance the response to radiotherapy or certain systemic treatments, as part of an individualised treatment strategy.
Its indication is determined following an expert assessment of the tumour type, the extent of the disease and the therapeutic objective established for each patient, ensuring its precise and coherent integration into the overall cancer management plan.
During radiotherapy, regular check-ups are carried out to assess tolerance, detect any potential side effects at an early stage and adjust the treatment where necessary. Once treatment has finished, a clinical follow-up programme is established to assess the therapeutic response and the patient’s progress.
This ongoing monitoring makes it possible to anticipate significant issues and ensure consistency of care at every stage of the process.
Radiotherapy treatment is not limited to its technical aspects. From the very first consultation, the department takes the time needed to explain the aim of the treatment, how it is planned, the expected number of sessions, any possible side effects and the recommended support measures throughout the process.
Each patient is made fully aware of the treatment plan tailored to their individual case and participates in key decisions as an informed partner. Clear information, continuity of care and medical support form an essential part of our care model.
The Radiotherapy Oncology department combines personalised planning, clinical judgement and multidisciplinary coordination within an environment designed to deliver high-precision cancer treatment with rigorous, person-centred care.
Where radiotherapy is indicated or may be required, the department carries out an expert assessment aimed at determining the most appropriate treatment strategy — technique, dose and sequence — within the overall cancer care plan.
