Regenerative and Sports Medicine Unit

Advanced medicine for the musculoskeletal system and physical activity

The Department of Regenerative and Sports Medicine at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is dedicated to the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries related to physical activity, sport and the functional wear and tear of the musculoskeletal system.

The department brings together specialists with extensive experience in sports medicine, orthopaedic traumatology and regenerative therapies. This multidisciplinary approach enables each case to be addressed from a holistic perspective, aimed at restoring function, relieving pain and facilitating a safe return to physical activity or everyday life.

In addition to treating the injury, the team analyses movement patterns and the biomechanical factors that may have contributed to its onset. This analysis helps to optimise the function of the musculoskeletal system, improve functional performance and reduce the risk of further injuries.

Clinical practice combines specialised diagnosis, biomechanical movement analysis, advanced regenerative therapies and, where necessary, specialised orthopaedic surgery. The aim is to offer each patient a personalised treatment plan based on rigorous clinical criteria and a precise understanding of the injury.

A holistic approach to the musculoskeletal system

Injuries to the musculoskeletal system are rarely caused solely by the affected tissue. In many cases, biomechanical factors, altered movement patterns or functional overloads play a part in the development of the problem.

For this reason, the team approaches each case from a holistic perspective that integrates clinical diagnosis, functional movement analysis and an assessment of the patient’s sporting or functional context.

This approach allows us not only to treat the existing injury, but also to identify the factors that have contributed to its onset and address them to prevent relapses and improve functional recovery.

The service caters for both professional and amateur athletes, as well as anyone experiencing musculoskeletal pain or limitations in movement in their daily lives.

Understanding the cause of the injury Musculoskeletal injuries are not always caused solely by tissue damage. Biomechanical abnormalities, functional overload or incorrect movement patterns can contribute to their onset and must be assessed to ensure a full recovery.

Regenerative medicine

Regenerative medicine is one of the cornerstones of our service. These therapies aim to stimulate the body’s natural repair mechanisms in order to promote the regeneration of tissues such as cartilage, tendons, muscles and ligaments.

Among the most commonly used treatments are injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), autologous growth factors and other biological therapies designed to stimulate tissue regeneration. These procedures are frequently used to treat conditions such as chronic tendinopathies, articular cartilage lesions, degenerative joint pain and persistent sports injuries.

Regenerative treatments are applied as part of an individualised therapeutic strategy based on clinical diagnosis, the severity of the injury and the patient’s functional needs. In certain cases, they enable joint or tendon injuries to be treated using less invasive procedures that promote functional recovery and help to reduce pain.

Musculoskeletal Medicine and Biomechanics

The department has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

The clinical assessment is complemented by biomechanical analysis of movement and diagnostic imaging techniques, which enable us to accurately identify the source of symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment.

This approach is particularly useful for patients with recurrent tendinopathies, knee or hip pain, muscle injuries, plantar fasciitis or lower back pain associated with physical activity.

Functional analysis enables us to understand how the injury occurs and to address not only the affected tissue but also the mechanical factors that may contribute to its development.

Sports Traumatology

When injuries require surgical treatment, the team has specialists in sports traumatology who are able to treat a range of conditions using orthopaedic surgery and minimally invasive techniques.

These procedures are frequently recommended for knee ligament injuries, meniscal tears, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder instability or certain complex tendon injuries that affect stability or functional performance.

The aim of surgical treatment is to restore the function of the joint or injured tissue and to facilitate a safe recovery.

The process includes clinical and functional follow-up designed to support the patient through to full recovery and a gradual return to physical activity.

Functional recovery and return to activity The treatment of sports injuries is not limited to pain relief. The ultimate aim is to restore the function of the musculoskeletal system and enable a safe and gradual return to physical activity.

Conditions we treat

This specialism covers a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions related to physical activity, sport or functional wear and tear of the joints.

Among the conditions most frequently assessed are:

  • Osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease, which can affect the knee, hip, shoulder or ankle.

  • Chronic tendinopathies and tendon injuries, such as those affecting the Achilles tendon, patellar tendon, epicondylitis or rotator cuff injuries.

  • Muscle injuries and sports-related overuse injuries, common in both athletes and physically active people.

  • Ligament injuries and joint instability, such as ankle sprains or knee injuries.

  • Meniscal injuries and other knee conditions related to sport or wear and tear.

  • Lower back or neck pain of mechanical origin, associated with movement or physical activity.

  • Plantar fasciitis and athlete’s foot, related to abnormalities in foot strike and gait.

  • Overuse syndromes and recurrent sports injuries.

  • Biomechanical movement abnormalities that predispose to injury or limit function.

Each case is analysed on an individual basis to identify the cause of the problem and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Diagnostic assessment

The diagnosis is based on a specialist clinical assessment that combines a musculoskeletal examination, functional movement analysis and advanced imaging techniques.

The most commonly used assessments include:

  • Medical history and detailed musculoskeletal examination

  • High-resolution musculoskeletal ultrasound

  • Biomechanical analysis and functional movement assessment

  • Gait analysis and sports movement analysis

  • Interpretation of imaging tests such as MRI or X-rays

  • Functional assessment aimed at a return to sporting activity

This diagnostic approach enables us to accurately identify the source of symptoms and tailor treatment to the individual.

To stimulate the body’s natural repair processes Regenerative therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma or autologous growth factors, aim to activate the body’s own biological recovery mechanisms and promote the repair of damaged tissue.

Treatments and therapeutic techniques

The department offers a range of treatment options, which are selected based on the type of injury, its severity and the functional characteristics of each patient.

Regenerative medicine

Regenerative therapies aim to stimulate the body’s natural biological repair mechanisms. The techniques used include:

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections

  • Autologous growth factors

  • Ultrasound-guided injections of tissue biostimulators

  • Viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid

  • Other techniques for biological tissue stimulation

These procedures are usually carried out under ultrasound guidance to ensure maximum precision of the treatment.

Minimally invasive treatments

  • Ultrasound-guided joint and periarticular injections

  • Local anti-inflammatory treatments

  • Minimally invasive interventional procedures

  • Combined treatments involving regenerative medicine and functional rehabilitation

Orthopaedic surgery and sports traumatology

Where the injury requires it, specialised surgical treatment may be recommended:

  • Arthroscopic surgery on the knee, shoulder or other joints

  • Surgical treatment of ligament or meniscal injuries

  • Tendon repair surgery

  • Minimally invasive orthopaedic procedures

Coordination with specialist trauma units

The Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital has a Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery department organised into specialist units for each joint.

Where the nature or complexity of the injury so requires, the team coordinates care with these units to provide the most appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approach.

This model enables the integration of functional assessment, regenerative therapies and specialised orthopaedic surgery within a single hospital setting.

High-resolution consultations

One of the key features of the service is the high-resolution consultation model.

This model enables patients to receive the following within a single care pathway:

  • Specialist clinical assessment

  • Carrying out any necessary diagnostic tests

  • Immediate interpretation of the results

  • A proposal for the most appropriate treatment

This approach facilitates more efficient care and enables the recommended treatment to be started sooner.

Personalised care for each patient

The team adopts a person-centred approach, tailoring each diagnostic and treatment plan to the clinical, functional and personal characteristics of each patient.

The aim is to provide medical care that combines clinical rigour, therapeutic innovation and support throughout the recovery process.

Specialist assessment in regenerative and sports medicine

The unit carries out specialist clinical assessments of patients with musculoskeletal pain, sports injuries or functional limitations of the musculoskeletal system, in order to determine the most appropriate treatment for each individual case.
