Pulmonary Nodule and Lung Cancer Unit

Expert assessment in the event of a pulmonary nodule or suspected lung cancer

The Lung Nodule and Lung Cancer Unit treats patients with suspicious radiological findings, incidental lung nodules detected on imaging tests, or a confirmed diagnosis of lung cancer who require immediate specialist assessment.

Early intervention is crucial when risk factors such as current or past smoking, a family history of the disease or persistent respiratory symptoms are present.

The correct initial interpretation of a pulmonary nodule is a critical clinical decision. Not all nodules are malignant, but accurately distinguishing which ones require follow-up, invasive investigation or immediate treatment demands specific expertise and oncological judgement.

Not all lumps are malignant A significant proportion of lung nodules detected on imaging scans are benign. Expert assessment makes it possible to accurately distinguish those cases that require intervention.

Highly accurate diagnosis and comprehensive tumour characterisation

The diagnostic process incorporates low-dose computed tomography, PET-CT, advanced bronchoscopy, image-guided biopsies, and histopathological and molecular studies.

This combination of techniques enables us not only to confirm the nature of the lesion, but also to characterise the tumour subtype and its biological markers – information that is essential for selecting the most appropriate treatment strategy.

Every decision is based on protocols defined in accordance with international guidelines for thoracic oncology and the individual clinical situation.

Individualised treatment strategy

The primary objective is the early detection of malignant lesions and the administration of treatment at stages when a cure is potentially possible.

Where the diagnosis warrants it, surgery, systemic treatment, targeted therapies or immunotherapy are planned according to the tumour profile and the stage of the disease.

The decision is made following a comprehensive assessment of risk, extent of the disease and the patient’s general condition, always prioritising the option offering the greatest actual clinical benefit.

When does a pulmonary nodule require specific investigation? The size, morphology, growth and risk factors determine whether follow-up, a biopsy or immediate treatment is required. The decision is based on defined oncological criteria and current scientific evidence.

Multidisciplinary oncology coordination

The complexity of lung cancer requires close collaboration between Pulmonology, Diagnostic Imaging, Thoracic Surgery, Medical Oncology and Pathology.

Cases are assessed jointly to determine the most appropriate course of treatment and avoid unnecessary delays.

This care model enables decisions that are consensual, consistent and aligned with international standards of cancer treatment.

Clinical support and clear communication in highly complex cases

Alongside rigorous diagnosis and treatment, the unit incorporates an essential element: sufficient time to clearly explain the nature of the finding, the true significance of a pulmonary nodule and the options available in each scenario.

Comprehensible information, planned follow-up and ongoing support form part of the care process, particularly in situations that give rise to uncertainty.

Decision-making is based on objective data and sound medical judgement, but also on personalised care and respect for individual needs.

Specialist assessment of a pulmonary nodule

An expert assessment makes it possible to determine the nature of the nodule, assess its actual risk and establish a diagnostic or treatment strategy consistent with the stage of the disease and the individual’s clinical profile.
