Rhinology, Laryngology and Voice

Diagnosis and treatment of nasal, laryngeal and voice disorders

The Department of Rhinology, Laryngology and Voice at the Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the nose, paranasal sinuses, larynx, voice, swallowing and the upper airway.

The division into subspecialist units enables a thorough approach to both chronic inflammatory conditions and complex functional disorders, as well as tumours and disorders affecting breathing, the voice or swallowing.

Each case is analysed on an individual basis, incorporating high-definition endoscopic examination, specific functional tests and advanced surgical planning where indicated.

The clinical aim is to preserve respiratory function, vocal quality and safe swallowing, whilst maintaining anatomical stability and monitoring the patient’s progress.

Endoscopic examination to confirm the diagnosis The decision to proceed with medical or surgical treatment is made following a direct endoscopic examination, which enables the precise identification of the anatomical or functional abnormality responsible for the symptoms.

When to seek medical advice for nasal, laryngeal or voice symptoms

Persistent nasal obstruction, sinusitis that is difficult to treat, prolonged hoarseness, severe snoring, breathing pauses during sleep or difficulty swallowing may require specialist assessment.

Clinical, functional and anatomical analysis enables us to accurately identify the source of the problem and determine the most appropriate treatment for each case, whether medical, rehabilitative or surgical.

In complex situations, treatment planning is carried out in coordination with departments such as Neurosurgery, Oncology, Respiratory Medicine or other relevant specialities, ensuring a comprehensive approach.

Surgery is considered when it is necessary to confirm the diagnosis with greater precision, restore impaired function or prevent the condition from progressing.

Diagnostic process and treatment planning

The care process begins with a specialist consultation that includes high-definition nasal and laryngeal endoscopy, voice function tests or instrumental swallowing studies, as appropriate.

Where the complexity of the case requires it, high-resolution imaging studies and surgical planning systems with precise anatomical reference are incorporated.

Each treatment recommendation is determined after assessing conservative alternatives, functional impact and realistic expectations regarding the patient’s prognosis.

Referral to the specialist unit based on the diagnosis Following the initial assessment, each case is referred to the relevant subspecialist unit, ensuring an expert approach based on the anatomical region and the functional mechanism involved.

Highly specialised clinical units

The specialism is organised into specific areas of focus, enabling each condition to be addressed with technical depth and coordinated care.

Head and Neck

The Head and Neck Unit specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of complex ENT conditions affecting the nasal cavity, larynx, pharynx and cervical structures.

High-precision endoscopic examination enables the identification of early-stage tumours or structural abnormalities, allowing for the planning of advanced functional surgery where indicated, with particular attention to preserving voice, breathing and swallowing functions.

Rhinology and Anterior Skull Base

The Rhinology and Anterior Skull Base Unit treats complex chronic sinusitis, polyposis, nasosinusal tumours and conditions affecting the area near the orbit or the anterior skull base.

Surgery is performed using a minimally invasive endoscopic approach supported by neuronavigation systems, enabling surgeons to operate with anatomical precision in highly complex areas.

Voice Unit

The Voice Unit specialises in the functional and structural diagnosis of dysphonia, vocal fatigue and vocal cord lesions.

Through laryngeal stroboscopy and acoustic analysis, even the slightest alterations in vocal vibration are identified, enabling the selection of medical treatment, precision phonosurgery or speech and language therapy, depending on the underlying mechanism.

Swallowing and Dysphagia

The Swallowing and Dysphagia Unit carries out advanced instrumental assessment of oropharyngeal dysphagia using videoendoscopy and videofluoroscopy where indicated.

Treatment is based on individualised rehabilitation programmes aimed at preventing aspiration, maintaining nutritional stability and ensuring respiratory safety.

Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

The unit addresses the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders through a comprehensive assessment that includes functional studies and dynamic analysis of the upper airway.

Based on this assessment, an individualised treatment plan is drawn up, which may incorporate medical treatment, specific devices or targeted surgery, depending on the severity and characteristics of the obstruction.

Clinical follow-up is aimed at improving respiratory stability during sleep and optimising the patient’s quality of life.

Facial Aesthetic and Functional Surgery

The Facial Aesthetic and Functional Surgery Unit addresses structural nasal abnormalities and facial imbalances that compromise respiratory function or anatomical harmony.

Planning combines precise structural analysis with functional assessment, prioritising respiratory stability and facial balance in procedures such as functional rhinoplasty or the treatment of facial paralysis.

Clinical follow-up and coordination between specialists

The department brings together specialists in rhinology, laryngology, advanced endoscopic surgery and functional head and neck pathology, working in coordination with Neurosurgery, Oncology, Respiratory Medicine and other hospital departments where the complexity of a case so requires.

Every treatment decision is based on sound clinical criteria and an individualised analysis of risks and benefits.

From the very first consultation, we take the time needed to clearly explain the diagnosis, its functional implications and the available options. We review the risks, benefits and realistic expectations before commencing any treatment.

Decision-making is a shared process, particularly when the procedure may affect breathing, the voice or the ability to swallow safely.

Structured follow-up helps to maintain respiratory, vocal and swallowing stability in the medium and long term, with coordination between departments where the patient’s condition requires it.

Specialist assessment in rhinology, laryngology and voice

An expert assessment enables the diagnosis to be confirmed, the most appropriate treatment unit to be identified, and an individualised treatment plan to be drawn up with coordinated follow-up.
