Patient information
The Voice Unit at Publio Cordón Memorial Hospital is dedicated to the diagnosis and specialised treatment of conditions affecting the quality, endurance and function of the voice.
The voice is an essential tool for communication and, in many cases, a professional instrument. When dysphonia, vocal fatigue or persistent changes in timbre and intensity occur, an expert assessment is required to identify the cause.
The unit addresses both temporary disorders and structural lesions of the vocal cords that may affect everyday communication or work performance. It is particularly aimed at people for whom the voice is a professional tool —teachers, singers, actors or broadcasters— as well as patients who experience persistent changes in their vocal ability.
The unit assesses organic dysphonia, such as polyps, cysts, sulcus vocalis or vocal cord paralysis, as well as functional dysphonia related to vocal strain or misuse.
A specialist assessment is recommended when the voice disorder persists for more than two or three weeks, there is a loss of vocal range, or difficulty projecting the voice.
The initial aim is to accurately identify the structural, neurological or functional cause of the disorder.
The assessment includes laryngoscopy with stroboscopy, a technique that allows the vibration of the vocal cords to be analysed in slow motion and enables the detection of even the slightest alterations in the mucosal wave.
Where indicated, a digital acoustic analysis is carried out to objectively measure parameters such as frequency, intensity and phonatory stability.
These investigations enable a diagnosis to be established and a treatment strategy to be devised that is tailored to each patient’s vocal requirements.

Treatment may include conservative medical management, hyaluronic acid injections to improve glottic closure, or neuromodulation for specific disorders.
For benign lesions, minimally invasive phonosurgery or CO₂ laser treatment is performed, aimed at preserving the vibration of the vocal mucosa and minimising scarring.
Where there is a functional component, a vocal re-education programme is established in coordination with a speech and language therapist.
Following treatment, follow-up appointments involving stroboscopic assessment are scheduled to evaluate vibratory recovery and phonatory stability.
For voice professionals, performance in their working environment and the specific demands of their profession are assessed in detail.
The unit comprises laryngology specialists with expertise in advanced functional diagnosis and precision vocal surgery.
During consultations, the mechanism of the disorder, its functional impact and the available treatment options are clearly explained. Risks, recovery times and realistic expectations are detailed, particularly for patients who rely heavily on their voice for their work.
Decision-making is a shared process, taking into account each individual’s communication and work-related needs. Coordination with speech and language therapy ensures a comprehensive approach that combines medical, surgical and rehabilitative treatment.
Clinical support is provided from the initial assessment through to functional recovery, with structured follow-up aimed at ensuring anatomical stability and maintaining long-term vocal quality.
The unit combines accurate diagnosis, personalised treatment and specialised rehabilitation for the safe management of voice disorders.
An expert assessment enables the structural or functional cause of dysphonia to be identified and a personalised treatment plan to be drawn up, aimed at restoring vocal quality, endurance and stability.
